Hoi An - which hotel?
Hi all, We are taking our three teenage daughters to Vietnam this summer. I am debating which hotel to choose in Hoi An: Ancient House Resort, Hoi An Riverside Resort, or the Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort. We love ocean swimming hence the Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort consideration. However, I am wondering if it is worth the extra expense. Would it be better to just take a bike ride or shuttle to the beach? Any feedback on this? Thanks! Allison

I stayed at the Hoi An Riverside Resort and very much enjoyed it. I saw the Victoria Resort in the distance and it, too, looked great. I stayed at the Victoria in SaPa and thought the extra expense was well worth it. It was a wonderful hotel.

We stayed at Hoi An Riverside Resort twice last year and had a great time the first stay, however they have not maintained the rooms and in Dec 2003 we moved 3 times as all the previous rooms had either smelly bathrooms, cable did not operate, rooms smelt musty.... It was a disappointing stay and we vowed next time (if ever) it would be Victoria Hoi An. We ate lunch on our final day there and viewed several room types. It is worth the money, especially the beachfront suites! Check out www.directrooms.com for price comparisons. Good luck!

Nan and Lyndie, Thank you for your responses! We intend to stay at moderate hotels during our Vietnam vacation, but I think we'll splurge in Hoi An and stay at the Victoria. We took the girls to Costa Rica last summer and stayed at moderate hotels except for our last stop in Manuel Antonio. We stayed at the Tulemar Bungalows with its own private beach. It was well worth the extra money and the highlight of our trip! Allison

AllisonL- I do not think you will be disappointed. The staff we met were top notch, well-trained, spoke excellent English, were helpful and eager to show us around. It is an attitude we like and the Hoi An Riverside Resort does not project any of the above hospitality necessities! I must say the beach out front of Hoi An Victoria is not like we have in Oz or anything like Fiji or Hawaii. The water is kind of grey (not dirty) and the sand a little grey also but there were heaps of kids swimming and they have a life guard on duty which we thought was a good idea. The pool is lovely also and the resort has a couple of motorbikes with side car for fun trips into Hoi An and an antique bus which is great fun to travel in. They also have a baby elephant who wanders around the resort. Do not miss Kimijam Cafe at 30 Nguyen Thai Hoc in Hoi An town. Best viet/french food we ate in Vietnam. Fabulous little find! Have a ball!

Hi AllisonL - in april this year we stayed at the new Life Resort Hoi An River Park, 1 Pham Hong Thai St, Hoi An Town about a week after it opened. Lovely, peaceful place, gorgeous rooms and pool, nice staff. Easily the best experience we had in Viet Nam. The hotel has a boat to take you down river to beach, but as an Australian, like Lindie, didn't think much of the beach itself.

Lyndie and Pat, We live on the central coast of California so we too know a good beach from a not so good one! Thanks for the low down... Tee Hee! I think my 15 year old daughter who surfs would much rather go on an Australian surf safari than go to Vietnam! Pat - I'm going to Google that hotel you stayed at. Thanks, Allison

Just returned yesterday from Viet Nam, Cambodia and Laos. Our small group stayed 2 nights in Hoi An at a quite nice hotel about a block from the old town. It is called Hoi An Hotel and caters to alot of groups but it is a really nice place with a lovely pool and excellent breakfast buffet.
Some of our group rented bicycles and road about 2 miles to the beach. The Hoi An Hotel is run by the same people as the Riverside Resort so they were able to use those facilities for beach swimming.
My notes say that the food at Cafe Hai in the old town was excellent. I also ate a lunch at the Banana Leaf Cafe were we could watch the river scene and also the street vendors would come by with their sunglasses or whatever for sale.
I enjoyed Hoi An, it is a World Heritage Site for its historic area.
