Help with Kyoto hotels

I am deciding between two hotels to stay at in Kyoto this october

Kyoto Royal hotel (central Kyoto)
New Miyako Hotel Kyoto ( near Train)

I think the royal is near the entertain ment district, but not sure

Any comments - Thanks

I have not stayed in either hotel. However, the Kyoto Royal has a much better location for sightseeing: it's on the main shopping street, it's just a block or two from Ponto-cho, and a short walk to Gion and eastern Kyoto. The Royal is also just a few steps from a subway station. I have heard that the rooms at the Royal are small and not at all fancy.

rizzuto, do you reccomend any other hotels in the area of the royal ?
I would like to stay under 180 usd per night (aprox 19000 yen or less)

The Kyoto Hotel Okura is in the same location as the Royal, and the Okura is a much nicer hotel. However, I doubt very much that you can stay there for under $180, especially during the prime fall or spring seasons.

We stayed at the Kyoto Royal hotel on our trip last year. Great location for sightseeing, etc. Much better than being near the train station. The rooms were small but nice. The hotel is nothing spectacular, but it's in a good location and it's nice and clean.
