Help with Japan fall colors trip

DH and I are stopping in Japan for a week en route to a bicycle tour of Vietnam. We will be in Japan Nov. 5-12. We have never been to Japan before and do not speak Japanese (but will give it a try!). We must fly in and out of Narita. We hope to see fall colors and Kyoto and sample traditional Japanese culture/food. We like to stay 2-3 days in one place and do day trips. Should we spend one night in Tokyo and then go to Kyoto and stay there for the rest of the week? Is Kyoto a good place to see fall colors in early November or would some other area be better?
Thank you for your help.

See here for details on where and when the koyo front might affect the different areas of Japan:

Of the two places you mention, Kyoto would offer the best probabilities of fall colors during your time of stay.

Aloha!

Thank you HT

The map is very helpful. Maybe staying in Kyoto but traveling out to the mountains might be the answer.
