Help Wante: Transiberia Journey
Hi,
I have a definite schedule for my transiberian exploration : Septemeber 27-October 12 (Beijing-Ulaan Baatar-Irkutsk-Moscow).
I need some sets of info:
I am bringing some canned foods, packets of 3in1 coffee, milo, cup noodles during my days and nights in the train. Is hot water for free and will be avaialble all day long?
Since it is a very long land journey, if I bring my laptop for games and watching downloaded movies , can i charge my laptop battery in my second class cabin or at least in any specified area? And is it free of charge?
Any more info while on the train are very much appreciated.
Thanks and appreciated your prompt reply.
Cheers!

Hot water is in a samovar in every carriage/car and is available, for free, 24/7. If your car attendant forgot to add coal and it's just lukewarm, go to the next carriage.
I do not believe there is any power for charging. And if there is I would not trust it to be operational.
Don't sweat bring food. At station stops, every 4 to 6 hours, there will be plenty of time to visit the food vendors on the platform to purchase food. Pot noodles are ubiquitous but other than that do not expect food you see at one station to be available down the line. Local specialties and all that. Some station stops are half an hour or longer and there will be more on offer at kiosks inside the station. Consult the posted schedule and try to plan accoringly.
Also bring toilet paper and vodka. Buy more along the way as necessary. Make your purchases as early as possible in the trip as prices will rise steadily as you head west.
If traveling alone, the vodka is a great way to meet the "locals" and to get them on your side. It's cheap enough so share generously. Also be sure to have a cable lock; store your bags under the lower bunk and lock the bunk down when not in your cabin.
Enjoy the scenery, the people and the experience with an open mind; it is a wondrous event.

Agree with above advice. When the train stops there are often local vendors on the platforms. We had blueberries at one place, fresh piroshki at another, new tomatos at another and so on. Only remember that the train doesn't let you know it's going so be very careful, at one place we had to sprint to get on.
In relation to keeping occupied, I took a number of things to do and found i barely touched any of them. Talking to others on the train and looking out the window took most of my time.
With toilet paper also HIGHLY recommend hand cleanser.
