Help -- wallet stolen, no cash, no credits cards

(cross-posted in Europe)

I'm in a bad situation, and any help or suggestions are welcome.

My wallet was stolen while I was getting on the train from Lyon to CDG today. So, I am at a hotel in CDG, no money, no credit cards. I do have my passport, and fortunately was able to check in. I am scheduled to fly to Hong Kong tomorrow morning.

I have notified the banks about the various cards, but I am at a loss how to deal with Hong Kong. Any practical tips would be extremely welcome.

p.s.: while I am sure that suggestions about how to avoid such situations are well-intended, they're not my primary focus right now. Thx,

Wow, so sorry to hear that! Glad to hear you still have your passport.

Can anyone in the US send you money via Western Union?

Can you buy the HK transport card online? (Octopus)

Sorry to hear this, Don.

A few ideas:

1. Can someone send you enough money to get you from where you are now to your hotel in Hong Kong via Western Union? I sent some money by Western Union earlier this year and it arrived in Yangon within hours.

2. Would any of your credit card companies be willing to Fed Ex you a replacement card to your hotel in Hong Kong?

3. Thursday's idea of seeing if you can buy an Octopus card online is a good one.

If you have American Express it is usually possible to get a replacement card at one of their offices virtually straight away. Your bank may have reciprocal arrangements with French bank. If you have travel insurance they may have some emergency arrangements they can put in force. Good luck!

Actually, if you can get the new CC numbers, you might be able to send money to yourself using Western Union online.

Glad to hear you found a solution. Both my AmEx card and my Chase United card say they offer such services. Please do let us know how it goes, Don.

Sorry to hear about your problems. And glad it is apparently resolved. But the Airport Express train tickets can indeed by purchased online, and one receives a QR code to travel. But for the tourist card, they probably will ask for the card itself.

And if you need help in HK, please let me know by emailing me directly at rkkwan at earthlink dot net.

So was some one from Amex there to meet you with your cash? Same thing happened to Beth(Mrs. Gpandas) boy friend at the same place. Luckily his wallet was separate from his cash and cc. Good luck.

Thanks for your very kind offer, Raymond. Everything worked as expected at HKIA, and I am perfectly good to go and am enjoying my time in one of my favorite cities. (More in a different topic later on.)

Bob/Karen, AmEx didn't meet me at the airport, but they did give my full instructions about how to collect the money at any of the Travelex offices at the airport. Travelex is the main money exchange bureau there, and the whole process involved plenty of paperwork but went smoothly.

Don, thanks for the report on how AmEx got the cash to you. Your story encourages me to keep my AmEx card.

I'm keeping AmExp as they've been great in some of my overseas situations over the past 35 years.

Happy Travels!

DonTopaz

Just saw this thread. So sorry about your mishap, but kudos to you for getting back on track and going on with your trip.

I expect a report! Have a good time, and glue that wallet to your butt.
