Help! Unknown gift from Tokyo. What am I eating?
 

My husband was given a gift of some crystallised fruit? in Japan which I believe are similar to marrons glaces.
I have yellow and dark brown 'lumps' similar to the picture shown on the website. The yellow pieces seem sweeter but they both have the texture of horse chestnuts inside.

Ah ha, I've found a link to the box I have and it does have pictures of horse chestnuts.

So are the brown and the yellow versions different flavors? Varieties?

Horse chestnuts are not edible. I'm assuming you simply mean chestnuts, the candied ones are, indeed, marrons glaces.

The brown and yellow ones are the same.

The ingredients are listed as 栗、砂糖、還元麦芽糖水飴 which means Chestnut, sugar, reduced maltose syrup.

mohan, thanks I think I ate enough of them to work out that they both contained chestnuts and sugar! :)

I do think the brown ones had a slightly sour taste and may have contained tamarind.

Large insects.

Just Google 'edible large insects' for a feast for the eyes.. cold, I think my diet will go well today, thank you.

Cold is an expert at kuri kuri

kuri is what that chestnut is called in Japanese. They are one of the most common and beloved tastes of the Japanese autumn. My mother used to get them from the local Shirokiya store here when I was young and I could not stand the taste then although sweet. Now I can tolerate the taste but you brought a smile to my face this morning with the kuri memories.

I have come across the anime character fooly cooly (furi kuri)!

I've always loved chestnuts. I have many happy memories of picking up a bag of hot roasted chestnuts in London; alerted by the smoky aroma before sighting the brazier, the perfect street food on a cold night.

The candied ones I have now are good too and better than any marrons glace I've tasted but not inexpensive as by my calculations they cost about $40 for 15 pieces.
