Help Please - Special Tokyo Experience

Hello, we are beginning a 2 week tour of Japan soon [my first, my partner's third]. She has been incredible, organising things down the last detail due to my busy work commitments. I would like to show her my thanks with a surprise experience in Tokyo. I'm looking for something intimate and special - something you can't find with google. Perhaps lunch or dinner at a very unique restaurant [I recently saw an amazing house in Crete built inside a tree!]. Long story short, I would like to blow her mind. We are on public transport from Asakusa. Budget under ¥70k.

Thanks!

Welcome to Fodors. We merged your two threads and tagged them for Japan.

Asakusa is pretty close (walkable even) to the SkyTree tower, so you could consider the 634 Restaurant (aka "Musashi") up top there.

I've never eaten there, but its got the highest view in Tokyo.

That's great, thank you!

I should note that while the budget is up to ¥70k, it doesn't have to be an expensive experience!

Thanks in advance.

SHIMA STEAK for lunch would be my pick!

As I noted on another thread, I was very thrilled to go to Hatsu Tsubomi on the 9th Floor of the Danke Akihabara Bldg. We stumbled into this place when we couldn't find the place we intended for dinner. We had no idea what to expect. The elevator opens up, and you step immediately into a garden with a waterfall, running stream, and footbridges. Almost all the seating is in private rooms. You could get your hotel to reserve, but I don't think you need to do that far in advance.

Dining at a robata restaurant might be fun. We took a first time Japan visitor to Roppongi Robataya and she really enjoyed it. A bit touristy for sure, you sit at the counter and choose what to eat, the cooks throw it on the grill then serve it on wooden paddles. Everything was fresh and nicely done, these yaki onigiri, roasted rice balls were a nice finish to the meal.

I am curious about what is your feedback of Tokyo. I am hoping to do it in may next year. Please share back on your top finding when returning.

One beautiful and unique restaurant in Tokyo that fits your budget is the New York Grill, located on the 52nd floor of the Park Hyatt Hotel in the Shinjuku area. This restaurant offers stunning views of the city skyline and a sophisticated atmosphere that is perfect for a special lunch or dinner. They are within your budget at around ¥10,000 to ¥25,000 per person depending on your meal choices.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for the advice. By this stage we had already seen Shinjuku and ended up near Taito City. Thank you though!

Hi Ericka,

I've been gathering my thoughts on this as it's so subjective. Having come from a small town in Australia I find there's something super exciting about big cities. I love the country, adore small towns, quaint stores and country folk in general - but the buzz of a monolith like Tokyo just excites the hell out of me! We stayed there twice. Once in a hotel in Shinjuku and once in a hotel in Taito City. Other than gifts for the folks back home we're not shoppers, so we spent the majority of our time checking out uniquely Japanesque experiences. In Tokyo most of these were food experiences, although when we stayed in Taito we went to the Sumo Nationals as well as Kappabachi as I wanted some cooking knives and my partner wanted a crockery set. Food is plentiful, even if you're trad food averse and the Japanese are so absolutely helpful. Several times locals saw us lost and walked us hundreds of meters to our destination. Having said all this, Kyoto was our favourite city. It's just got such a cool, small town vibe - far less 'city' than Tokyo or I assume Osaka.

Hope that helps!
