Help – Can’t find right hotel in Langkawi

Hi,

We are a couple intending to stay 1 week in Langkawi in April.
Despite checking many, many trip reviews on the web, we can`t seem to find the ideal hotel. Those hotels which we did like from the hotel description and which are in our price category seem to get poor reviews, especially for the quality of the rooms and service.
We hope that some readers with local knowledge or who have had a recent trip to Langkawi can put us on the right track with a good tip.

So that you have an idea of what we are looking for, it is:
- Beach location
- Beach suitable for swimming
- Pool
- Good standard room and bathroom (clean, with A/C, reasonably up to date)
- Good food or convenient location to a selection of good restaurants and cafes
- Good service quality

This stay is intended as a chillout after a 2 week Malaysia tour.

Price category ca. 200-400 RM (50-100 Euro) ( 70-120 USD) per room per night.

Many thanks to all respondents!

I would try the Pelangi Beach Resort, nice beach, several restaurants to choose from ( Thai restaurant is excellent, Chef is Thai ! ), also they have nice BBQ some nights at the beach cafe place. Rooms are ok.
Overall it is a good mid range to upper standard resort. Only entertainment is a band and singer in the loddy lounge area, but langkawi is a quiet place anyway. It is a quick short trip from the airport and there are other places along from there for restaurants. Langkawi is 'quiet'.
I don't know what it will work out rate wise though.

I think the Pelangi might be well over your budget, a cheaper one is the Frangipani which I only know from when it was the Langkawi Village resort, nothing like the standard of the pelangi but might be more within your budget. It's further along from Pelangi, rooms are far more basic, though a/con, small restaurant and beach place, but long sttrecth of beach. There are not so many places on Langkawi. Holiday Villa I did not like at all, but when I was there it was just 'so quiet', I think only a few of the rooms were occupied, but the rooms were not that nice, the Frangipani had a nicer feel to it.
Although I never stayed the Berjaya might be within your price range.

Hi

My wife and I went to Langkawi in March last year and we stayed at Pelangi. You can read my opinion of the hotel and see some pictures in my trip report http://gardkarlsen.com/Malaysia_Langkawi.htm . The room and hotel was very nice but the beach itself is not excellent. Well, check out the trip report and get in touch with me if you have any questions :d Are you also making a stop in KL?

Regards
Gard

Try Bon Ton resort - http://www.bontonresort.com/bonton.html

A small villa type hotel very different from the larger chain type hotels. Not directly on teh beach but it is 5/10 mins away from the beach at Pantai Cenang and certainly a place to chill out. Has a very good reataurant.

Within that budget it is going to be tight, there perhaps are not as many resorts or hotels opening to balance with increased travelers, Frangipani seems to be going more upmarket so prices will go up, there are places that area 'not' on the Beach and if that is not a problem then you might be ok, but I think you will be looking closer to the RM 300-400 than 200-300 range.
But you can balance that with other things such as food and transport being cheap.

You could also try The Mutiara should be around the USD 100 range, I have not stayed there but it is closer to your price range, though you won't get as many restaurants etc as you would at Pantai Cenang area.
