Heat
Im off to Thailand (BKK and Islands in South) and Cambodia (Siem Reap) at the end March.
Im a little concerned about the heat and touring temples and bangkok. Are we talking about the heat maxing out at high 30's midday or more? |
In my experience that is exactly what you can expect at that time. One of the locals may comment. Hope you have fun anyway!
|
Sorry rocky, I was referring specifically to Bangkok.
|
Looks like it might be early starts and relaxing middays.
Went to Las Vegas in August last year and the heat there was insane 40+, couldnt cope but at least you can hide in AC hotels for a while. Im not sure they installed AC in Angkar Wat when they built it! ;-) |
As teh saying goes: it's the heat, its the humidity; something like 90% almost total saturation. That is what gets to you, IMO. Dry heat is not quite the same.
|
It will be very hot since the middle of April is the hottest time of the year in Thailand. Expect 39 - 40+ with very high humidity. Vegas hot is different try Miami type of heat and humidity.

Thanks Guys,
either way its going to be uncomfortable unless sat next to a pool or on a beach, Still beats the british winter. |
Here's something funny - around March to April is the time that most well to do Thais like to go to England so that they can get away from the heat!
|
I've been to Bangkok at the end of March and it's VERY hot. I would say in the mid 90s at least and high humidity. Happy Travels!
|
I'm from South Texas where from may to September it's just like Cambodia. Still, for us it was HOT. Truthfully we're not used to being outdoors in the heat that much.
Drink LOTS of water, try to go out early in the morning and late in the day. Take a siesta or head for some AC in between. In Bangkok it's easier; everywhere is blasting AC and spots neaar the river are cooler; in Cambodia you might only find relief at your hotel pool or in one of the cool dive bars in town. The most important thing is this: memory is merciful. I've been home for 5 weeks now and I remember everything about that trip except the heat. |
... the heat and humidity hasn't left my mind and that was 4-years ago. I'm quite familiar with the 3-Hs (hazy, hot and humid) of an ugly New York summer, but Siem Reap especially, kicked my butt. BKK wasn't much better and the sun in Phuket had me off the beach in an hour; coming from someone who doesn't hesitate enjoying the beach in NY.
The premise - it's not the heat, but the humidity - is certainly true. Though even if dry a-la-Las Vegas - when the mucous of the eyes dry out, that too is unbearable. Be prepared with sufficient changes of clothing. Happy hot travel, you'll enjoy Southeast Asia, nevertheless. |
I'll take hot sticky humid heat over that "dry" heat anyday. Vegas and Phoenix in the summer are just plain brutal. However, I find Florida, Central America, Mexico, etc. in the summer to be just uncomfortable. I'm hoping Thailand in April will be no different
