HCMC hotel suggestions, great location!
 

We, two couples in late 40's, will be in HCMC for 3 nights early April.

The only thing we haven't done for our trip to Cambodia & Vietnam, is organise our hotel here. In Siem Reap we are staying at the Golden Temple Hotel in a deuxe room, at USD 114.00 per room per night. In Hanoi we are at the Hanoi Elegance Diamond Hotel in an Exec. room at USD105 + 10%VAT per room, just to give you some idea.

We like comfortable rooms but location is also hugely important.

We stayed at the Blue Diamond Hotel in HCMC at the beginning and end of a month-long trip to Vietnam last spring. It might meet your needs, i.e., comfortable with a great location. It's easy walking distance to almost everything. A bit cheaper than the ones you quote above.

Aussiedreamer, we stayed at the Liberty Central, for, I Think, about $100USD. The location is fantastic (a block from Ben Thanh Market) and the rooms large and comfortable, but it doesn't have any of the charm of the Hanoi Elegance Diamond.

Liberty Central has a small swimming pool, at roof top, comes handy for those super hot, humid days. We had a very small room for the price. Remember, if you don't want to hear traffic noises, or loud PA system blasting commercial selling stuffs, pick the highest floor if you can. I also hear from other relatives raving & stayed at Blue Diamond.

By the way, across from Liberty Central, there are tons of places that can make prescriptions eyeglasses for very reasonable prices, including designer brands, you just have to sharpen your bargain skills & they can make within hours/day. Best currency xchge rate, go to any jewelry stores, like the one at the corner of Liberty Central, night time next to Benh Thanh Market is open air market/eating area, quite fun.

Our friends liked the idea of a pool, but it pretty much looks like the highend ones are the only option. Not really what we were after, I'll check Liberty Central though.

For me as long as my room is airconditioned I'm happy.

They do the testing also. Remember to bargain directly with the owner!!! Get polaroid, so nice, I got mine diagonally across the street from Liberty, something with the name Ngoc.

The pool at the Liberty Central is very small, but surprisingly nice. My DH used it while I relaxed in the air-conditioned room.

I go for history and location, and for both the high-ceilinged, marble-floored Continental Hotel fits the bill.

It's ight next to the Opera House, a stones throw from cathedral and post office and town hall, a short walk from the Reunification palace. Opened in 1880, it features in Graham Greene's novel "The Quiet American". It's a quiet and unassuming place, I think around $130 a night.

For something more glitzy and art nouveau Majestic Hotel opened in 1925 on the river front.

By the way, the city is called Saigon, not HCMC, as far as the locals are concerned. It actually says 'Continental Hotel Saigon' on the hotel, the railway station says 'Ga Sai Gon' on it in big letters, and your train tickets to Nha Trang or wherever will have 'Sai Gon' printed on them, not HCMC!
