I see a medical dr. who is also an herbalist and acupuncurist. When I went to Papua New Guinea he recommended and made up artemsia for malaria. It is recommended by the world health organization. (I have previously taken other anti-malarial meds for othr trips). I didn't get malaria. I plan on taking it for a trip to India. You may want to check it out.

hwolkow, please note that artemisins are used for TREATMENT of malaria, not for prevention. Depending on multiple individual differences and differences in where one is traveling, some people are recommended to take along a treatment dose for malaria rather than to take anti-malarials.

i think any traveler who is interested in the topic of malaria might really learn a lot from spending 30 minutes on the cdc website.

it is extremely educational in terms of where and when and how malaria is transmitted.

once you comprehend the very specific factors necessary to contract malaria, you will make more informed choices about your precautions.

it dispels many popular myths and instantly informs discussions. go to the source!

kerikeri, you are so right! I noticed that while I referred to the cdc website in my posts, I forgot to put in the URL - oops! Thanks for posting the address.

For those of you familiar with the cdc website, note that the whole website has been updated recently.

We here in the tropics use Avon Skin So Soft instead of Deet to repel mosquitoes. Works really well in repelling mosquitos and softens your skin while using it. Hope this helps!
Aloha!

Will be using Sawyers time release 20% DEET (available at REI) and taking malarone while in Vietnam.
