Has anyone used a Discovery Pass lately?
I've read several threads concerning the Discovery Pass; but, I have some concerns.
Someone mentioned that there might be limited seats for certain flights using the Discovery Pass. Has anyone found this to be true? Also, can you book your flights from the US using the Pass? Our itinerary includes flights from Bangkok to Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai to Lao Prabang, Lao Prabang to Siem Reap, Siem Reap to Hanoi, Hanoi to Hue and Hue to Saigon. I think all of these flights are available of the 3 airlines involved in the Pass. Would this be our best option? Thanks |
I tried this week but unfortunatley they had sold out of my LP- BKK sectors, however i contacted Eddie at SEA Tours and he got me all my sectors at a really good price and not that much dearer than what i thought the discovery pass would work out to be!

***Yes; we had to re-jig our itinerary b/c not all flights go daily, and some were booked. Do it at least 3-4 months head, and before you book accommodation. Also, can you book your flights from the US using the Pass? ***Yes, but you'll have to work hard to find an agent in a US city to talk with, rather than dealing with a call centre in India. Search their website diligently for the numbers, or search the topic on this board. Our itinerary includes flights from Bangkok to Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai to Lao Prabang, Lao Prabang to Siem Reap, Siem Reap to Hanoi, Hanoi to Hue and Hue to Saigon. i'm not sure all of those routes exist....many times you have to return to bkk from onr point to another....
like all flights they fill up... all passes have to be purchased overseas from asia |
With your schedule the only flights on the airline pass that you could take without coming back to Bangkok are Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang and Luang Prabang to Siem Reap on Laos Air. However the flight LP to SR goes through Vientiane and takes 4 hrs. with a plane change. Bangkok Air does not fly from Bangkok to Chiang Rai and the only airline from SR to Hanoi is Vietnam Air.
Of course you could take Bangkok Air from LP to Bangkok and then to SR and SR through Bangkok to Hanoi using the pass but it would depend on connections.and weather you save any money. From Bangkok to Chiang Rai you can take either Thai or Air Asia and from CR to CM it is only Nokair |
Thanks so much for your responses. It looks like the Discovery Pass might not work for our trip. Laos Air offers a Pass from Chiang Mai>Luang Prabang> Siem Reap for $270. What about the Asean Pass? What airlines participate in it?

I called Bangkok Air and worked out my itinerary for October and November with them. Then I double checked online, the prices including taxes etc. In my case I got all the flights I wanted, using the Diiscover pass with some savings.
