hi J
there're some regular trains from Hanoi to H C M city, the fastest one departs at 21.00 (S1)and the other(S3)at 21.50.
but as my experience, within 10 days you'd better do the North only just because It's the most beautiful part of the country.Halong Bay with limestone formations up the sea water,Sapa in the mountainous area and especialy the minorities peoples who still keep the very traditional styles of living...Any further information you are interested in, welcomed
enjoy your trip

I am planning on spending some time in Sapa during the 10 days. If you have more info on it or anything else that wbe good to do in the north it would be most appreciated. Thanks - J

Keep up the planning for Sapa. Friendly people, cheap beer, beautiful scenery & busy markets. A good place to relax.

We just returned from Vietnam. Definitely Hanoi. Handspan has a very nice boat trip in Halong Bay. We did the three day, two night option, with a day hiking at Cat Ba Island. Don't bother with Saigon - linger in Hanoi.
