I did a full report on Hanoi restaurants when I returned in November, 2003. If you do a search for Hanoi restaurants, you'll find it.

Cha Ca Le Vong was our most memorable eating experience. Choice?? None! Fine china? No! We sat with a group of Vietnamese businessmen on lunch break at a long table. A hot frypan on top a brazier contained fish sticks cooking in dill oil; accompanied by many bowls of food you cooked with the fish. Price $9US for two including soft drink.

we had a very nice lunch at Meditranio at 23 nha tho st across the plaza from the hanoi catholic cathedral...it is expat owned and very good...standard western fair with asian add-ins...was about $18 for a lovely lunch: pizza, drinks, creme carmel and lemon sorbet...
great neighborhood in the old section to shop in as well...we talked to the woman owner who sent us on some good shopping tips...i think she was an ozzie, but i may be wrong...
fake cd are a fabulous buy but some have playing issues...4 for $3....

I recomend Le Tonkin restaurant. It is so famous for its Vietnamese cuisins. I think you will love this. The address of the restaurant is 14 Ngo Van So Street, Hanoi. And the other one is Brother cafe is on 26 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Hanoi. Try this.

Among the new restaurants we had a GREAT meal at Wild Rice - do not have my Lixe guide handy so cannot provide address. Pull it up from google - was also Conde Nast rated last year in their "hot Tables" list. Dressy tho not very exp. Everything we ordered was great.

Another very memorable experience was at a school Hoa Sua Restaurant
6C Phan Chu Trinh, Hanoi Tel 8240448
Pastry Shop: 8am-7pm daily
Lunch: 11am-2pm daily

Below an excerpt on the restaurant
"Hoa Sua, a trusted address among the city?s expatriates. Also accessible directly from Quang Trung street, this restaurant?s garden setting, daily specials and very reasonable prices make it a favourite with regulars. The attentive staff are all hospitality and catering trainees, participants in a worthy initiative for disadvantaged youth." When u call to make a reservation ask for directions as it is not easy to find. We also enjoyed Vine, 1A Xuan Dieu, ph: 719-8000, fine dining, Vietnamese French cuisine.
