hi Bob - I don't know if you remember me - I don't post around here so much (mostly since I don't have that much opportunity to travel to Asia - but hopefully that's changing soon), but I wrote a trip report (mostly about food) about BKK a couple years ago...

I wish I had advice for you - my wife and I spent a couple days in Hanoi about 10 years ago, on our honeymoon - and you and many members here graciously gave us tons of information for our planning.... I posted a trip report called "Honeymoon in SE Asia Trip Report" when we got back... I don't know if it's still up here, but I described our time in Hanoi (and the restaurants we went to) as much as I could (the Hanoi part is near the end)... but, it is 10 years later, so who knows how accurate that information is nowadays... plus, our two favorite experiences there were STREET FOOD! so I don't know if you'd want to partake anyway...

In terms of official "restaurants", we enjoyed Cha Ca La Vong, and the Emperor... I'd assume CCLV is still open - they're an institution, but I don't know about Emperor... it was on the expensive side, for Hanoi, but it was fantastic at that time.

In any case, enjoy!!
