Halong Bay vs. Bai Tu Long Bay

We are looking at a 2-night cruise with Indochina Junk in July, primarily because our understanding is that they miss a lot of the "traffic" in Halong Bay and go further north to Bai Tu Long Bay.

Evidently the boats leave from Hon Gai (is that in Halong Bay?)

So...lots of questions - will we "miss" anything major or beautiful scenery by not staying with a boat primarily traveling through Halong Bay?

Is Ba Tu Long Bay as beautiful?

Is choosing a company based on this lesser-traveled route a good idea?

Thanks for any more tips and recommendations!

Stephanie

I'm waiting for others to reply to your great question!

Hon Gai Pier is around 15km from Ha Long city (20 minutes drive). It’s also a harbor of Ha Long Bay. There are three main harbors for boats in Ha Long Bay: Bai Chay, Hon Gai and Tuan Chau. Indochina Junks’ program, as we know, still covers the most beautiful sights of the bay and there is no problem to take this boat or its route. If you need our recommendation about a good local agent, just let us know

Thank you, Henryjim!

Is it better to book online ahead of time, or book with a local agent (online, ahead of time as well?) I feel like waiting to book it with only one or two night's notice is not secure enough.

Many thanks,

stephanie

Stephanie, I'm wondering if you used Indochina Junk and went further north to Bai Tu Long Bay. If so, do you recommend doing that?
Many thanks,

IMO Phang Nga is more scenic and better.
