"Halong Bay" is in fact 3 bays

Most people talk about "Halong Bay" without really realizing that, in fact, there are 3 bays. First, you have the big island of Cat Ba , 1-hour east of Haiphong by speed boat. South and east of Cat Ba, you have Lan Ha Bay, which is perfect because the channels are too shallow for big cruise boats, so, they cannot cruise in that bay, which means less tourists and garbage ; north of Lan Ha Bay, you have Halong Bay proper, which is becoming a garbage can ; north of Halong, you have Bai Tu Long Bay, characterized by larger islands with small beach hotels (islands of Quan Lan, Coto, etc.).

For 2 days, I recommend Lan Ha Bay ; for Bai tu Long, which is way north, better in 3 days

Thanks Larsay! I am planning a trip to this area in February and this information is helpful. Cheers!

Absolutely agree with Larsay - It depends on how many days you have for it!

We will have only half a day at Halong Bay. Which Bay would you recommend to go to and what company/boat?
