Halong Bay cruise ship burns

http://www.thanhniennews.com/society...ire-61898.html

Take a look at the photos. Scary stuff. I was going to do a Halong Bay cruise as part of my trip to Vietnam next February but I think I'll pass and go somewhere else. I was there in 2004. Besides, I hear the bay is full of garbage and is way over touristed. Local government is thinking of banning cruises or cutting way back on how many are allowed.

And this isn't the first time. At least this time there were no deaths.

CaliforniaLady May 7th, 2016 12:33 PM

Yes, Kathie is correct, there have been reports for years of boats sinking and burning.

I personally found the cruise to be a bore, and since you did it once, susie, I am confident that you will find an alternate activity that doesn't require you to "swim to safety." Maybe somewhere less touristy?

I'm thinking Ninh Binh and Mai Chau area. I did not go here last visit. Isn't Ninh Binh called dry Halong Bay? Also, as we will be in Vietnam in February the weather in the HalongBbay area is not too good. We might not be able to go swimming from the boat as we did the last time.

Susie, Ninh Binh is a great choice!

Crellston, one of the regular posters here has a blog, and here's his post about Ninh Binh:

i preferred Mai Ch u area. If yo can, do both, but if i had to pick only one...Mai Chau! Lush, beautiful, mountains and valleys!

I amend my post. I forgot that CaliNurse planned a fascinating trip to Mai Chau last year--please look back at her planning posts. I have not been in the region, but it sounds so fabulous. So heed CaliNurse's advice and put Mai Chau first, and Ninh Binh second.

Thanks, my fellow California lady!!
I did have a very interesting trip, and like you, took much of Crellston's info--he loved am Chau as well, though went more off the beaten path than I in the area.
I'm admittedly pathetic at doing TRs, but am happy to share info via any questions!!
In Mai Chau, I stayed at Mai Chau Eco Lodge (NOT just "Lodge"--there are tow)--a beautiful place in midst of countryside. My review is on TA.
In Ninh Binh area,I stayed at Nguyen Shack and was underwhelmed, although many others love it.
