Halong Bay and Halong Bay on Land

Some people think that it is the same, one in the sea and the other one on the land facing the "Sea" Halong Bay. Halong Bay on Land is called that way because it consists of a myriad of limestone peaks in rice fields instead of in the sea. However, Halong Bay is 120 km NORTH of Hanoi and stretches up all the way north to the Chinese border, whereas Halong Bay on Land is 93 km SOUTH of Hanoi, starting near Tam Coc 8 km west of the town of Ninh Binh. There are so many beautiful things to see and do in the area : river boat rides (the best are Tam Coc and Van Lang), Bich Dong Pagoda, Thai Vi Temple, Hang Mua Peak (stunning panorama of the whole region after climbing 450 steps), the two temples of Hoa Lu, second capital of Vietnam, transferred to Hanoi in 1010, Bai Dinh Pagoda (the largest in Vietnam but about 10-year old and without any charm), etc. that you need two full days to really enjoy the main attractions. Most tourists visit all by bicycle - it's all flat terrain-, free in hotels. The best way to go there is a day train Hanoi-Ninh Binh (6, 9, 13:00 - 3-hour ride) + taxi 8 km to Tam Coc.
