Hakone ryokan

Seeking Hakone Ryokan suggestion for a night stay in June between Tokyo and Kyoto stays, with husband and 18y/o son. This will be our first time. Thanks!

The sites I used were these:

For the most respected ryokans:

https://www.ryokancollection.com. Their ryokans in the Hakone area are:

and....

https://www.ryokan.or.jp/english/

One thing you ought to decide before you book is whether or not you want a traditional tatami room or a Western room; some ryokans offer both; some only have traditional rooms where you will sleep on a tatami mat.

Another factor is whether or not you would like a private onsen (bath)--in your room, if you want to bathe with your partner--or are you fine with a communal onsen??
Communal often separate men and women so you would be alone while husband and son take their bath separate from yours.

Do any of you have tattoos?

In 2024 I stayed for 2 nights at Mount View Hakone. It's not at all a luxury ryokan, but I was really happy with my experience there - great value for money. The futon in the Japanese style room was super comfortable, and the meals were delicious and beyond plentiful. I used the women's onsen one morning and had it to myself. There are also private onsens which can be rented for an additional fee. Depending on what you want to do while in Hakone, it might be a bit out of the way, but there is a bus stop right in front of the inn.

You can use Japanican to book ryokan nationwide with confidence

Expedia and Booking dot com also have many ryokan (pronounced yo kan) in their inventory.

If you are interested in a nice experience in the Hakone region our favorite is the Hyatt Hakone. Really love this place! Gambatte!

In 2023, we stayed at Gora Hanaougi Madoka No Mori and loved everything about it. It was little splurge, not extravagant. We had a traditional tatami room and a private onsen on our balcony. Of course they also had communal baths. I was the only one in the female one, likewise my husband had the male one to himself. The meal was gorgeously presented and delicious. The staff were super sweet. In their gift shop, I purchased pretty ceramic "covers" to put over the drain in bathroom sinks, very decorative. I have them in all my sinks, an everyday reminder of that lovely place. (I have not seen anything like them anywhere else, even online.)

In 2012, we stayed at Ichinoyu Honkan. Our teenage son was with us, so it was more budget friendly. We again had a traditional tatami room and a private onset on our balcony overlooking a river. The sound of the river was very nice, both while in the onset and while falling asleep. We only had breakfast there, nothing special, maybe just not to our taste. The building is architecturally beautiful and historical. Hiroshige did a wood block print of it. The location is very convenient.

There're so many good options in Hakone. You won't make a bad choice.
