Gunung Mulu Caves
 

Has anyone been to Miri in Borneo and gone on to the Mulu caves? If so was it worth the time and did you have a problem getting there because of weather conditions? <BR>

Hi Kay, I just returned from Borneo where I tried in vain to get from Miri to the Mulu caves by air. There are only two flights per day from Miri to Mulu, with small (16 seats) aircraft, which means you have to book very long in advance. From photographs and descriptions I understand that it would well be worthwile to get there. Regards. Rose

Thanks for the tip Rose. I read somewhere that seats were hard to get so I booked a flight on Malaysia Air a couple of weeks ago so hopefully we will <BR>get there. Other than not seeing the caves did you enjoy your trip to Borneo?

We have bin to Mulu some years ago and it was really worth it. we flew to Limbang and went by boat to a longhouse. Then we walked on the Head-hunter trail to the pinnacles and came down the river to Mulu. The trekkin was tough but nice. <BR>We can really recommend the caves but you should go there with a guide. The way to one cave is about 2 km through an interesting tropical forest.

Hi Kay, Yes, I enjoyed the trip. I was on a day-tour to Bako National Park which was too short. There is nice bungalow accommodation available at the Park Headquarters, there are many trails through the jungle, and there is also a beach. The I did a two-day tour to an Iban longhouse which I also recommend. In Sabah you should go to Mount Kinabalu National Park and to Poring. If you have any specific questions, please let me know. Hi, Kaye,Rose and Barbara, <BR>Youv'e answered the question I also wanted to know. I had in mind to do the headhunters trail but it sounds a bit tough as we are taking our 8 and 11 year olds. As we are going in 1 week it isn't likely we would get a flight. So a few days at Bako could be a good alternative? Rosie

Is it still this hard to get to Mulu??? I want to arrange a trip there for my family. they would be going from Kuching via Miri I guess. In November. Should we arrange with a guide in advance? They would love to do the headhunter's trail and stay a night in a longhouse. Is three days enough? Too much? <BR><BR>Also, does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay in Kuching. I know the Holiday Inn location is fantastic right there along the river, but we prefer smaller more individualized places and a bit less expensive. Ideas?<BR><BR>By the way, I have been to a longhouse near Pelagus and it was an unforgettable experience. The highlight of both my previous trips to Malaysia. I went from Sibu on a boat (2 hrs?) to Kapit. There is a guide in Kapit who can set things up for you (unfortunately I don't have the reference now). After that we stayed at the 'lost' Pelagus Resort in the middle of nowhere. We were the only ones there! It was wonderful. They have amazing jungle hikes with a knowlegeable guide who works for the place. The night hike enabled us to see the amazing GLOWING fungi - everything glowed! It's probably not worth more than a one to two day stay unless you just want to sit by a (small) pool and relax, but it was a fun and secluded getaway. The food at the restaurant was good.<BR><BR>Anyway, advice to above questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Does anyone have experience with tour companies at Mulu? Which one should I use? How is the stay at the longhouse? Is it very "commercial" and phony?
