Gulf of Thailand vs. Andaman Sea?

Newbie starting to plan trip to Thailand (probably Jan 07). Would like to spend a few days at a beach resort. A very basic question: Are there any significant or fundamental differences between the two sides of the peninsula that would affect my choice? Thanks.

From my own personal observations – and I’ve been up & down both coastlines several times – the Andaman side has superior beaches, superior scenery, more islands to visit, cleaner water and superior seafood than the Gulf side.
