Guide book to China

Hi, I wonder if anyone would recommend good guide books to China for me please. We are planning on visiting Beijing, Xian, possibly Lijiang, possibly the island of Hainan and Shanghai.
Thanks

People are looking for different things in a guidebook. I'd suggest going to a bookstore and looking at several different guides.

May I suggest "Google".

Agree with Kathie. Go to a bookstore and check them out. Some have more photos, some have longer text, some have better maps, some have more description of the sights, some have better recommendations on lodging/dining.

Also this discussion was about Hong Kong guides, the responses are relevant:

We used both the lonely planet and the D&K Eyewitness guides which we bought new on ebay for a fraction of the cost.
