It's good the GTG was this past weekend since the city is aflame right now. I was driving north up the 5 freeway yesterday ,coming home from work, when I noticed big, brown clouds of smoke. As I got around the Los Felix area of the 5 I noticed the hill on the opposite side of the freeway on fire. There were huge, orange flames coming down the hill right near the freeway. And last night, there was bright orange flames everywhere.
It's quite difficult to breathe right now. I just arrived to work and had to drive the same route again. This morning, when I left home, my car was covered with ashes. So, you out-of-staters got out of towm just in time. Happy Travels!

Guenmai - are you saying we left your city in flames??? You aren't saying we started that, are you?? Just kidding - I'm really sorry to hear this since all is so beautiful to look at and since I don't wish the health hazard on you and other wonderful Pasadenians!
A brave step Cheryl!

Truly sorry I could not attend as planned. I'm not surprised that it was a great fun success...as someone said, you sure know how to throw a heckuva party! Happy tavels to all.
Stu T. (we can see the smoke from our back deck, and I could smell it this morning. We live in a hilly brush area, ...Mulholland and Benedict...and pray a little every season)

Stu...I'll mail you out two of the personalized totebags that I had made up as soon as I can get to the post office, hopefully at the end of this week. I have your address.
I have had things piled up at home to mail out to folks for weeks. It's hard for me to get to the post office.
I hope your house will be ok. This fire is awful. I remember some years ago when there was the fire right in the hills along the west side of the 405 a little past the Skirball exit. I was driving home and the orange flames were actually all the way down to the freeway level right next to me...not a pretty picture. Take care. Happy Travels!

I too am sorry to hear about the fires. It was on the news this morning. When did they actually start? Must have been on Tuesday when I was in the air heading home...
I hope it is quickly taken care of before it destroys too much of the lovely CA landscape!!

Carol...The fires started yesterday afternoon, about 2 hours before I had to drive past them to get home. I hope they're out soon, too as we haven't even entered the real fire season yet. Happy Travels!

crosscheck: sorry to have missed you too!--I was looking forward to chatting as I feel like I already know you from all your posts!..and thanks for reading the blog--nice to know we have fans I was telling some of the folks at the GTG that, thankfully, we'll be updating it again for our upcoming Laos/Vietnam/Hong Kong trip in November.
Carol: wished we would've had the opportunity to catch up too! the whole thing went by way too quickly. we did do a travel blog from our trip to thailand and cambodia last november (our first trip to SEA) and had posted it here in lieu of an official trip report upon our return. if you're interested in reading it, please feel free:
http://www.travelblog.org/North-Amer...og-101631.html
That's the first (rather uninteresting) entry--you can read through the rest from there if you're interested.
hope to see more of you all very soon!

I just reread my GTG report. Please excuse the typos. I didn't notice them when I quickly speed-read through it. I'm on borrowed computers and usually working on a very tight time schedule. Happy Travels!

Guen - I didn't notice the typos either, but in case you didn't know, there is a way to go back and edit your post after you've posted.
Press your browser's "Back" button until it displays the Preview pane (not the editing window). Press "Edit." Make your changes, and hit "Post my reply."
(To edit an old post, go to "Approve reply" in your history.)
This method only works if you have previewed your post, and of course you have to be on the same computer as you were when you originally posted.

Crosscheck...I just noticed the part where you said I had to be on the same computer that I had originally used before I can edit. Well, I'm on a lot of borrowed computers so I have no idea what computer I was on. So, if folks haven't really noticed the typos, then we'll just let it be and keep it quiet...Shh...Smiles. Happy Travels!
