Great Thai restaurant in NYC?

Hey guys, going to visit the family this weekend back East...and haven't been back in quite some time. Definitely not since my Asian obsession started, so haven't really been able to sample the Thai offerings in the City.

Hoping someone can recommend a great Thai restaurant somewhere in Manhattan that has great food and a great atmosphere.

The best Thai will not be in Manhattan but in Queens.

Sripraphai is excellent; near the #7 train and an easy drive from midtown

I also like Zabb Queens, in the same neighborhood

thanks for the recco, eks.

unfortunately, Queens isn't an option--we only have a limited amount of time after I stop off to visit a friend in Manhattan and before I have to catch my flight back.

that said, any manhattan reccos?

Try Kitti Chai. It's in Soho. Sort of Thai Fusion.

eks is right on the money.. Sripraphai is the best, but bring cash!

mohan Apr 10th, 2009 04:50 PM

I second Sripraphai. It's good and cheap.

It is quite pleasant to sit in the outdoor garden if it is warm enough.

Besides, queens is closer to the airport than Manhattan.

again, queens isn't an option. catching a ride from a friend's apt in manhattan. thanks again, though, guys.

my friends have recommended a place called pinto that looks like it'll fit the bill.

andy, that place looks really nice, BTW--maybe a bit too nice for a lunch?

Its an option if you're willing to follow your lustful desires.

I would recommend Pongsri in Manhattan, 48th street, between Bway and 8th Ave. It's quite good.

Below I have copied an e-mail from my Thai colleague with Thai restaurant recommendations:

"1. Pongsri: www.pongsri.com

They have decent food with fine seating area. They have 2 or 3 locations. The best one is in Chinatown. But the one in the midtown area is also good.

2. Wondee Siam II: nymag.com/listings/restaurant/wondee-siam-ii/

The food is fine, and they have decent decor. They have another location just one block away (53rd and 52nd and 9 ave. on the other side of the street) also called Wondee Siam that serve very authentic food, but it is very small (they have only 20-25 seats) and there is no decor. If you look for a comfotable place to sit, I probably cannot recommend it, but if you want to go for food, this is the best place in NYC. (If you decicde to go to a small one, ask for a waiter named Noom, and tell him that you are from Fordham and is my friend, he can recommend some good dishes.)

3. Topaz Thai Restaurant: nymag.com/listings/restaurant/topaz-thai/
is a nother fine one in the midtown area.

4. If you'd like to venture out of manhattan, go to Sripaphai in Queens - the best one in New York area. The decor is fine, lot of space and great food. My favorite. I go there often. Try sofshell crab in spicey source. http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/sripraphai/ "

So far I have only tried Pongsri.

Enjoy!

Try " Room Service " 166 8th Ave between 18th and 19th street. Really good food and the prices are not bad for Manhatten. I beleive you can look at the menue on line if you google it.
Enjoy!

mango, can't quite say that i understand exactly what you mean, but that wouldn't be the first time. :)

thanks gina and vikinggirl...appreciate the additional suggestions!

FW-lots of choices. Pick one and go with it. Do note that by posting this thread, you're obligated to report back on how the restaurant turns out.

This place downtown has received some good reports; I have not been, though:

Rhong-tiam? LMAO. I prefer Sholt-tiam. You get in and out, fully satisfied, and you're on your way.

HI Will
Another vote for Topaz Thai.. a solid not fancy or expensive place...but consistently yummy. It is very near my office....I cannot tell you how many times I've been sitting at my desk and gotten very hungry reading Fodors trip reports from BKK....that I've had to run to Topaz Thai for lunch.
Any chance you are still around on Monday for lunch?

Have a great weekend in NYC,
Lorna aka cruisinred aka leopardprintpants ;-)

rhkkmk Apr 12th, 2009 07:55 PM

SRI... should be on your next visit...

Kathie Apr 12th, 2009 07:59 PM

Lorna, I had no idea you were also leopardprintpants
