Great shopping guides for Southeast Asia

For those of you interested out there. There's a GREAT series of shopping guides that I've been using for years....the best on the market in my opinion. They are called, The Treasures and Pleasures of Thailand(including Burma)...Singapore and Bali...Singapore and Malaysia...and Vietnam and Cambodia...They are by Impact Guides and written by Ron and Caryl Krannich,PH,Ds. The websites are ...impactpublications.com and...ishoparoundtheworld.com. There's a wonderful shop in Kuala Lumpur that's listed in the book. It's called...Ahmed Toko Antik 25/15-23 Jalan Raja Muda Masa(name of street) in the Kampong Bharu area of town...get a driver..Tel.298-4258. This is one of those old, dusty, shops in a Malaysian community that's crammed with tons of treasures...artifacts from Malaysia,Thailand,Indonesia,Papua New Guinea...etc..When I arrived, the owner looked puzzled and asked,"How do you know about my shop?" They also do shopping guides on other parts of the world and have written many books on how to move and work abroad. Happy Travel...Happy shopping...

I forgot to add that in the Singapore/Bali book there is a list of 101 things to do while in Singapore. It's a very good list...enough to keep one busy for a very long time.Happy travels!

I second your opinion. We are going to Hong Kong and Thailand this fall and I just stumbled in the library on The Treasures and Pleasures of Thailand, and I just could not put it aside. I liked it so much, that after that I bought The Treasures and Pleasures of Hong Kong. Highly recommended. They also offer for Thailand Nancy Chandler maps, so I bought these too.

Hi guys...Glad you love the Treasures and Pleasures guides, too. They are the absolute best and they are great because there's lots of other information in them besides just shopping,...like the lists of websites for all sorts of things like...discount flights...and detailed descriptions of hotels...etc.. Happy travels!

Greetings from BKK! Looks like I'll have to go out and find this book today. I have a friend who sells used tourist books, mostly in English. Maybe he will have the Treasures and Pleasures title. Sounds like a very helpful book.

There is a new version out soon or already out, not sure. I'm not all that impressed with T & P. I like Time Out guides. They are very hip! and I'm a bit hippy!

What's the ISBN number for Time Out guides? What do you mean you're a bit "hippy". Are we talking "hippy" as in the i960s meaning of the word? I'm very "hip", but not "hippy". So, I don't know if Time Out will be for me or not. I'll look for it at the bookstore though. Happy Travels!

How funny, Lydie! I'm glad that's been cleared up. Aussie humor is funny. When I was in South Australia staying with an Australian friend, upon arrival to her house, she gave me both an Australian/American English translator book and a little book of expressions. Then it was hilarious when her husband came home from work, changed his clothes, and then announced,"Let's fire up the barbe(sp?)...meaning barbecue". I stood with a shocked look on my face thinking he was getting ready to set his daughter's Barbie doll on fire or something! We all had a BIG, hysterical laugh over it. Happy Travels!

Guenmai--I've been using the Treasures & Pleasures Guides for years and was recently looking for one on Malaysia since I'm going there in Sept. I went to Impact Guides website after reading your post and found the one you mentioned, but the publication date is 1996. Do you (or anyone else) know if the information in it is still good, i.e., are most of the stores mentioned still in business, at least the better ones? Or, will I be wasting my money if I order this? Thanks, Laurie

Guenmai - I see you have topped an old post. We used the Treasures and Pleasures in India with much success - many thanks to Bob and Karen of this forum for lending it to us. We also have the latest edition of the Thailand/Myanmar book for our upcoming trip to Bangkok. It is organizied much differently but I think it will be just as useful.
