Great Eagle Hotel, Hong Kong
 

We're heading back to HK this fall, and my travel agent is recommending that we stay at the Great Eagle hotel on Peking Road for a good view of the harbor and island. We've been to or through HK 6 times already, but this hotel was built since we were there last, so I can't personally verify the location with respect to the view. It's just on the other side of the Ocean Terminal from the Star Ferry. Can anyone comment on the hotel or view? <BR>Thanks.

we stayed in this hotel in oct 2000 <BR>it is 5 stars all the way,very well located <BR>our room had a dull view of the street but the view from the health club is superb

Thank you for your response. Since the health club had a superb view, is it fair to assume that at least some of the rooms also have a superb view? <BR>Since I originally posted, I found out that although the Great Eagle is a new hotel, it was not newly built; it used to be the Renaissance Hotel. Perhaps someone who has stayed there could answer my question. <BR>Thank you.

Well, Les, we had absolutely no view from our room either. We traveled in a group of about 50 people and took up probably about 30 rooms all through the hotel and no one had a room with a view. However, none of us really cared since we were there for only a short time and spent very little of it in our rooms. The staff and hotel were suberb though.

That should be "superb". Guess I'm still jet-lagging...

Hi Amber! Guess what, we stayed at the Great Eagle too in March 1999! But like you, we did not get rooms with a view. I suppose they give them to people who travel individually and pay much more, i.e. the full rate. But as you mention, the room is just for the night, so what? <BR>PS: I loved your "Yes, I have the bug".

Ursula, <BR>I guess that I don't share your philosophy, "...the room is just for the night, so what?". <BR>After being out and about all day experiencing the delights of travel, I see no reason to come back to a boring hotel room, even "just for the night". I enjoy relaxing in a comfortable, well equipped room with a good view, especially in a city as uniquely beautiful as Hong Kong. This doesn't mean that I don't spend as much time exploring as you do, it simply means that, after returning to the room, I can spend additional time relaxing and enjoying the view (that's the same view that we went out of our way to see from the promenade, or the Star Ferry - why would it be any less worth seeing from the comfort of your room afterwards?). Perhaps with a drink in my hand and a lovely companion by my side. <BR>So I always make it a point to get the best hotel that I can afford (afford being the operative term)whenever I travel. And when I can't afford what I'd prefer (which is too often, I fear), then it's OK for the room to be "just for the night". <BR> Les

Les: Please, do not get me wrong. The hotel, its staff, the location, everything is fine. Of course, it is not The Peninsula or The Regent. But it is correct, that I do not care SO much about a room with a view in which town whatsoever. For me, a hotel has to be well located, comfortable, clean and if possible quiet. I am a heavy traveller in Europe and Asia. When being on holiday in a beach resort, I definitely wish to have a nice sea view. In a city, it is not a definite "must". Other advantages go first, the view for me is then in second place. I care more about a quiet place especially when arriving jet-lagged in Asia. It takes a couple of days to become acclimatized. If I get a nice view, I definitely appreciate it, for sure! <BR> <BR>Les, have a great time in HK! <BR>

Les, we stayed at the Sheraton when we were in Hong Kong at the time of the Handover. The weather was wet and steamy all the time, but the view from the hotel was still superb. You might consider it.
