great 4-star hotel in bangkok for first-timer

I was wondering if anyone has stayed in a great 4-star, reasonably priced hotel in downtown Bangkok recently. I realize there are a million hotels in Bangkok, but one with a great pool, maybe a gym, nice breakfast buffet etc., that anyone thought was good value and can recommend that I should book over the New Year period 07/08 would be very much appreciated.
Thank you for this!

The Landmark Hotel, might even be considered a 5 star, but the prices are much more reasonable thatn the river hotels. They tend to offer nice two fo rone specials. Fabulous breakfasts( our family thinks their's beat both the Oriental and the Peninsula 's), beautiful rooms, and great location right by the Nana Skytrain station.

This is the busiest time of the year. You should book as soon as possible. Also note, there may be a mandatory New Years Eve dinner party. This can be quite expensive. It should be factored in to your calculation.

For shopping and being very close to a skytrain station have a look at the following, all under $150
Holiday Inn Ploenchit
Pathumwan Princess
Siam@Siam
Arnoma (low 4*)

Also I like
Grand Diamond
Majestic Grande
Menam Riverside

i would second both the majestic grande and bangkok holiday inn and i would add the new marriott courtyard in back of the four seasons...

my all time favoirite is the marriott resort and spa on the river which may still have rooms available

The Majestic is nice. I had a walk-through of it. Just get a room at least 40 meters big. I was shown a 30-something meter room and it was clostophobic. Also try Neilert Park. I don't know if it's 4 or 5 stars, but it's very nice and in a relaxing environment. Happy Travels!

The Patumwan Princess has one of the best gyms in town, with saltwater pool, tennis courts, basketball court, reading room and more. BUT it's probably already booked up for new year.
