good gift ideas to bring for Chinese colleague
Visiting a colleague in Shanghai and wondering what to bring him from the US. Would like to spend about $50.00. He's a researcher for basic brain behavior.

Depends on where you're from. If you're from the Pacific Northwest, I'd suggest a small native American carving in Alaska or British Columbia jade. You can find examples in your price range on ebay; galleries would have similar choices. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...an+jade&_sop=3

I have taken picture books of scenic US.
A variety of chocolates that are not easily available there. The Chinese candy and chocolates are not at all sweet so the US ones are somewhat of a novelty as they are "so sweet."
Ordinary US chocolates such as Hershey's Dove etc. are available there but not Sees or Ghiradelli or some other regional ones.

You said a "researcher" but if where he or she works is like an office perhaps a desk accessory or two (memo pad holder, business card holder, paperweight, pen holder or pen, that kind of thing) from a local shop where you live. If it was made of local wood or metal or maybe with "Made in USA" label(assuming you are from USA of course)that would be even better.
See this link as an example.
