Good Article on Bali in Today's NY Times Travel Section

Thanks for posting that Craig. I live in Indonesia and hope to visit Bali in the next few months. I'm just beginning my research, so the link is a big help.

I thought this was an awful travel article. I always feel like the Times "36 hours in..." stories miss the point of places, but I felt his one missed it more than most. The intro alludes to the spiritual, but the rest of the article makes no mention of visiting temples or even noting the daily offerings made in every home, every field, every shop, every car... It sounded like Bali was all expensive glitz. Yuck!

Thanks for posting the link, Craig. It's always useful to know what is being publish/what others are reading about Bali.

Kathie, hopefully you don't think the popular press is going to cover the "special" experiences we all write about on this board. I did not say it was an excellent article but I did say it was a good article since it did a pretty competent job of covering the major hotels, restaurants, shops and some of the touristy things that are all part of a visit to Bali. I would also say, having spent 12 days there myself, that the author packed quite a bit into 36 hours!!

i thought a lot was missing out of the article, but i could see that it would create interest for some segments of the population....bali is more...

Craig, I have to admit that reading the article reminded me of what a wealth of information there is one this site! You're so right that the popular press just doesn't convey the info available to all of us here. I guess that's why I don't subscribe to popular press travel mags. I just expect more of the NYT.

Thanks for posting this Craig. Just like any places, 36 hours is really a short time to "take it all in", however, I agree that the author did a pretty nice job summarizing the major attractions of Bali. I am going to send this link to my friends, as we will be travelling there next year for my wedding.

I think given how much tourism has dropped off from the the US to Bali, having the Times write anything has to be helpful for all the people who work in tourism there. And they did manage to mention Spa Hati and Threads of Life.
Let's face it -- no one on this board does 36 hours -- we'd need to be reading Bali - Immersion to feel gratified. |
