Goa to Trivandrum Train
I will be in India, early December and am looking into taking the scenic train from Goa to Trivandrum. Searching online I know so far that:
1. The scenic one from Goa to Trivandrum that uses the Konkan railway route is the Rajdhani Express from Delhi to Trivandrum. 2. That it leaves Delhi on Monday's and Wed and arrives in Goa on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and then leaves Goa and arrives Trivandrum the next morning. The current schedule on the Konkan railway website is valid to Oct 2007. Do the knowledgeable people on this board know if: 1. The same schedule will hold early December? 2. Can I book the tickets online? At the Konkan Railway website there is a link to online booking but when you get there, this train is not a choice in the pulldown menu. Any experienced info appreciated. lsaldanha |
I have taken the Konkan Railway form Mangalore to Goa. While the train route does pass through exceedingly beautiful scenery, your enjoyment of it from the train is very limited. These are not Swiss style scenic trains with ceiling-to-floor windows etc. So, it is scenery itself that you are after, trains ought not to be the vehicle of choice.

Last time I was in India getting to Goa by train was a challenge.
So now there is a Rajdhani Express. Brilliant. Just posting to say stick with your plan to travel by train. Good on ya! Sorry can't be of any help with the details, except to say if you are going to be in Goa for a few days then you are bound to find a travel agent to book a seat for you. In India all things are possible. Happy travels. |
I did the Mumbai to Goa stretch, which wasn't especially scenic (unless it was your first Indian train trip), but I'd love to do the Goa to Trivandrum section. I used an Indrail pass bought from www.dandpani.dircon.co.uk (even though I live in the US), but chimani is right that any travel agency in India will buy tickets for you. I even bought some at the station on my own, but that can take a lot of time.

Try the Indian Railway website at:
http://www.indianrail.gov.in/. I have not travelled by this train or route but know folks who have. The schedule should hold most of the time :=). Good luck. |
Just to complete the picture, I always bought train tickets from the station, as and when I needed them. It can take time but you need to know that it is not essential to use a travel agent. I never have. I just suggested it as one of the options.
If you are going to be in Delhi beforehand, you can buy tix there for journeys that don't originagtre inginanreysjerein Delhi for journeys that don't start in Delhi. You hougtix tuselte |

If you are going to be in Delhi beforehand, you can buy tix there for journeys that don't originate in Delhi. There is even a special office for foreigners. My keyboard is all over the place tonight so apols if this went off half finished. |
