Go to Pai or not?

My husband and I are a 60 yr. old adventurous couple travelling for 8 weeks in SEAsia. We are unsure whether to go to Pai. We would stay 2 nights. Please advise.

We have been twice. Loved it the first time which was maybe 12 years ago as a drive around the MHS loop. Quiet, laid back small town where we stayed in a nice cottge at a hotel overlooking the paddies.

We revisited around 4 years ago, stopped for lunch and just kept on driving. It seemed to have gotten very busy and loads more tourists. I would give it a miss. Soppong, Mai Sariang or MHS are better bets or add thetime elsehwhere.

We liked Pai. We stayed there 2 times. It was a bit touristy, but we enjoyed walking about and just hanging out & visiting some of the surrounding area. It also makes a good stop when driving the MHS route. Loved our room in our hotel on the river. We had a fabulous meal at a place recommened by a former regular poster on this board. Unfortunately he doesn't post here anymore (or I havent seen him in awhile).
Belle Rive was the hotel on the river.
Hanuman on this board recommended eating at Baan Benjarong.

Pai itself is lame tourist town. The greater area however is nice. Major caves at Soppong.
