I so appreciate all the info. It's not so much farthings I'm trying to save, that gave me a smile as I haven't thought of farthings for quite some time! but when the base rate for a night (Hyatt direct internet rate) is around $170 and tax and b/f is not included, and its a pre pay, non refundable it is probably a bit more expensive than I'm looking for. I have put in for a quote from Hyatt through Sawasdee, and did go to the Hyatt website but it wasn't very clear about what the difference was between a regular King and a Club King. From this site, i've gathered that the Club King includes evening drinks (oh good) and canapes, what about breakfast? I'm talking about booking direct through Hyatt.
I was glad to know that the rooms at the Hilton were nice, thanks James, the highrise part does not phase me. As the Hilton rooms will be free, I'll wait a while on my decision to cancel. See what else can be found for the end of Jan 07. The dates I'm looking at for Hua Hin are Jan 28-Feb 1

Also, thanks GPanda the Soffitel direct was interesting, and I joined the Soffitel Accor Group so that I could be advised of special offers.

As most of you think Soffitel or Hyatt is bestin HH I will be checking them out for a good deal.

The one problem I find is that it seems that none of the direct hotel sites tell you about the 17% tax. It's hard to compare when the Sawasdee and Asiarooms include taxes and breakfast.

the club at the hyatt is a whole different section of the hotel...its like the executive club in any hotel...

asiarooms.com do have many of the hotel prices for winter on their site....as sawadee (HH.20m) has told me that they will not post fall/ winter rates until september, i have done a november res for marriott resort and spa with them....great price actually...take a look and see if they have the hyatt....but it is a pre-pay...

are either of you 62, i expect not....the seniors rate at hyatt is not bad...

the HH.20m rate for last jan was $159 and $209 for club at the hyatt, all inclusive (tax/service= 17.7% plus breakfasts)

kathie can clarify but i believe the club breakfast is a limited one in comparison to the reg room buffet breakfast??

the marriott is another option for you in HH...rooms are older but the location is fantastic and the pool and beach are very nice and its much closer to town than the hyatt....sofitel is a good option too..

Another vote for the Sofitel..a lovely old place beautifully restored a few years back. Also agree about the cute railway station. Enjoy!

Confessing to being a major point junkie for American Airlines,(free Buss Clss flight over) Marriott, (3 weeks on points for hotel or our in timeshares) and Hilton wherebI had planned to stay on points, it is difficult for me to pay money to stay at another chain, (and not get points) however, overall the Soffitel keeps coming up as a winner with everyone. Thanks so much for all your input... having a wonderful time is more important than points!!!! We are going to Hua Hin to experience a new area of Thailand and, hear there is very good eating, seafood which we love, and music, blues, jazz,in the area. Also, thanks for the positive info about the train, that actually sounds very interesting. Perhaps a chance to meet local people etc, which we always like. Question about the train, does one usually get a seat? (it won't be a Friday). Also, in Jan would it be really hot?

i think you will get a seat....probably next to a chicken or a goat....haha

some trains have a/c, some not i read...

the train station is not far from the bkk marriott i think...

quite honestly take the limo or a taxi, imo and charge it to your room and you will get points...haha...or the hyatt van if you stay there...sofitel is a nice property and well situated....we have only gone there for tea...

Tip: Whatever you do 'don't' take the 0745 train from BKK, it is a railcar sort of train, best ones are the long haul expresses, around 2.30 pm until about 3.30 pm there are at least 2, these go all the way south ( The International express routes into malaysia ), these are the best trains.

If you are a film budd the Sofitel Hua hin is used in many films ( and local TV damas ), it was 'L'Hotel Phnom Penh" in the movie Killing Fields. Very grand!
However, if you have a free stay I wouldn't stress too much on the Hilton, rooms are good and although a high rise if it is free on points....well!
You can easily walk to the Sofitel and very close to dine, have Afternoon tea etc.
