Getting hotel upgrades when checking in

We are staying at the Royal Orchid Sheraton and have booked a standard room. I am wondering how easy it is to get an upgrade when we are checking it - is it like in Las Vegas where you slide a few notes across the reception desk and they will upgrade you? Has anyone tried this, and if so, do you have any tips?

You can always ask for an upgrade. If you have stayed there before, if you have special status in their frequent stay program, etc, they might give you an upgrade. You can also ask how much extra it would be to get a Towers room. Remember you get breakfast, drinks and hors d'ouvres and free laundry (6 pieces per person per day) in your Towers room price, so it's worth it to pay extra.

I don't know of anyone bribing their way into a Towers room at the Royal Orchid.

i would imagine that you may have a slight chance of you are part of their frequent stay programme, or if it is low season(does Bangkok have one? We went in August which I would have thought would have been low season-no discounts then) Otherwise, the most likely way to get an upgrade is to pay for it!!

PS
Aren't you the Louise that got the good hotel rate through Priceline? If you are, you saved enough to pay to upgrade!

Yes Mary, I did get a good deal through priceline, but that was on the Marriott Resort not the Royal Orchid! The easy way is to pay for an upgrade of course, but I like to explore all avenues!!
