I'd like to visit Georgia this year, we tend to manage our own tours, but we are looking for any information on the cycling infrastructure, the ease of access to wineries etc. Any thoughts?

I can't find the link to Georgia in Europe, Admin any ideas?

I found a Dutch site which says the roads are of very poor quality, the drivers are less than respectful of cyclists, pickpockets abound, don't take valuables with you, and don't annoy the locals, many of whom are armed. If that lot doesn't put you off the recommended times are spring (April/May) and autumn, as the winters are cold and the summers are very hot.

My friend went to Georgia couple of years ago and loved it, he travelled quite alot in the country. The photos were amazing, definitely a place I would like to go. Cave dwellings, monasteries, wineries, the scenery, all gorgeous, stayed in a lovely hotel in Tbilisi which had a wine cellar. He said the locals were very friendly and welcoming. Food looked amazing but I've had plenty of that in Russia & yes it is really good. He did not cycle so cannot comment on that. He did not go as part of a tour.

The Dutch site did say all of that but honestly the site was so down on most countries when I read it further. I think the bit about the roads is true, the rest is just common sense isn't it?

How odd. Turkey, largely in Asia in under Europe. Canary Islands, whilst off Africa are part of Spain, at the same level as say Catalunya, not a separate country but come under Africa. Now Georgia, like Turkey transcontinental, is in Asia. I suppose it makes sense to someone.

Probably the decisions/geographic divisions were made decades ago -- Fodors forum has been around since at least the late '90's and has been under maybe three different companies. Moving things probably would be more trouble than its worth???

I think Georgia is on the Asia board because it is east of Turkey. I did feel it was more European than Asian.

I very much enjoyed my visit back in 2009, but I can't help with the cycling question - I traveled by marshrutka, bus and taxi. I had no difficulty visiting a winery, and would think it would be even easier now.
