Furano / Biei in late August - car or Lavender express?

We'll be visiting Hokkaido late August, and will be passing Asahikawa on our way from Sapporo to Daisetzu-san National Park. We're thinking whether we should rent a car from Asahikawa for half a day, visiting Biei and perhaps Furano. Are we really, truly out of luck for lavender (we'll be there on August 25th...)?? I heard there's these late-blossoming lavender?

How about sites along the road from Asahikawa to Biei and Furano? Actually we'll be just as pleased to see some greens and wild flowers. Should we just walk around Biei or go all the way and the farms in Furano?

August 25th is the last day when the Lavender express runs, has anyone here taken it? Should we consider that instead? Which stop should we spend more time with?

Thanks,
Kat
