fresh fruit in Vietnam

My travel doctor says to only eat unpeeled fruit, b/c of the risk of contamination while being peeled and/ or rinsed in contaminated water. What do u fodorites have to say about that? PS: going TUESDAY!

Your travel doctor has correctly quoted food and water precautions from the cdc.

The places I stay, I usually get a fruit basket in my room, so I can peel the fruit myself. I do eat fruit at my hotel's breakfast buffet, but I do not buy peeled fruit in the markets. I traveled with a friend once who became very ill from eating peeled fruit purchased at a roadside stand.

Know the rules for food and water precautions, know when and why you chose to violate them.

I have regularly enjoyed freshly pressed fruit juice from markets throughout Vietnam without ant ill effects. As Kathie rightly says, steer clear of ready peeled fruit. Most vendors will peel and juice fruit in front of you. Avoid those that don't or insist on freshly prepared, which won't be a problem. Enjoy! There are some amazing and unusual fruits available there.

PS Many people simply forget to wash their hands before eating (money is particularly filthy! - think about carrying one of those anti-bacterial hand sanitizer sprays for convenience.

Yes, a good guideline for fruit juices, crellston.

thanks all. Our hotels ( 2star only) all used filtered water as did the restaurants, so we stopped worrying about eating fresh fruit from , basically, the minute we got our first meal. By the time we got to CAmbodia, we were drinking water with ice! No ill effects.
