Four Seasons Bangkok
Hi,
Sorry, i already started a previous post on hotels in bangkok, but thought i should start a different post if the question is slightly different ... hope this isnt annoyingly repetitive to those regulars on the post ...
having used all your information to decide on a hotel, we finally booked the four seasons. we decided on a premier suite, however have just been informed by the hotel, that there suite isnt available now with two double beds. there is only a premier room available. has anybody stayed in this style of room before? will it be too small for two people - a mother and daughter? there are still suites available at the Penn with twin beds ...

I wouldn't want to be at the Penninsula with a young person -- too isolated, cold and empty feeling. I have not stayed at a Premiere room at the 4 Seasons but I think it is a much better choice for you. Alternatively I would take Kathy's advice and stay in a suite in the Tower Wing of the Royal Orchid Sheraton. I always stay at the Oriental and after my one stay at the Pen and numerous visits to their public areas will never return (and yes I am in the minority). You might consider the Garden Wing duplexes (not suites) at the Oriental as because of the floor plan -- beds on one floor and sitting area a few flights up or down-- it's a good choice for two people. And the price will probably be less than the suite at the Penn -- and you're at a hotel with a little "life". And, yes I know that I am a minority opinion on the Pen.

You're not alone about the Pen! I feel the exact same way!
Love the Oriental (I know- the presistant debate). But you worded it perfectly- "cold". I have stayed in both hotels and the garden view duplex rooms at Oriental are just wonderful.

We actually love the Peninsula, and so does our daughter. We've stayed there 5 times total, twice this summer. I don't much care for the layout of the deluxe/grand deluxe rooms because of the way the TV cabinet faces the desk and neither the sofa nor the bed...so anywhere you sit to watch TV other than desk you get an angled view. But the suites, they are very, very good, as is the service 99% of the time.
The pool is great in our opinion, and they come around with ice water and cold fruit from time to time which is a nice touch. We always choose to sit in a sala...keeps the sun off, the fan in the ceiling keeps it cooler, and it feels a little private and special.
We ALMOST tried the Four Seasons Bangkok for our second stay in Bangkok in August after a wonderful stay at the Four Seasons in Singapore. But, we know from experience that the river is the place we want to be.
The pool is great in our opinion, and they come around with ice water and cold fruit from time to time which is a nice touch. We always choose to sit in a sala...keeps the sun off, the fan in the ceiling keeps it cooler, and it feels a little private and special.

OK...Now let me throw in my 2-baht's worth. Anyhow, I've stayed at the Four Seasons for many years and would still be there if I hadn't moved into a serviced apartment building. I absolutely adore the hotel and staff and love the location. You've made an excellent choice. Don't get talked out of it.
As for the room size, I've always had a standard room which is quite roomy. As far as I remember, the smallest room there is 40 square meters big which is what I've always had. In one of the new condo buildings going up on the side street to the Four Seasons, I was just looking at a studio condo...in September... and it was 45 square meters big. So, 40 square meters for a "hotel" room is quite generous in my opinion.
As for the comments on the Pen, I agree. I know there are lots of Pen fans on this forum, however, I've said from the gitgo that I found it cold. I've stayed at a LOT of hotels in BKK over almost a decade and have among many stayed at the Metropolitan...which I love, but not for your situation, the RO Sheraton, The Oriental...which I'd pick over the Pen any day...and many others. But, as far as I'm concerned it's the Four Seasons.
The Rajadamri slytrain station is across the street fromt he hotel and it's only about 4 stops down to the end of the line where the river starts and you can jump on a public river boat, for a few baht, and go up river to the sights.
When you turn to the right after leaving the hotel, as you walk along the sidewalk you'll see a whole line of food vendors cooking on the street. It's always lively. When you get to the corner, there's the beautiful, outdoor Erawan Shrine...open 24 hours..and with Thai dancers and musicians. You'll also now have Gaysorn mall across the street and Central World Plaza Mall across from Gaysorn. You're in the heart of the shopping. Plus right up the street from Central World Plaza is Pratumum Market with tons of vedors selling clothes, etc...It's next to the Indra Hotel. You can walk from the Four Seasons. And my favorite rest stop is the Erawan Tearoom which is in the building right above, and overlooking the Erawan Shirine...right above the Burberry store. The tearoom is so relaxing for an ice cold limeaid drink and some S.E.Asian fingerfood or small dishes of a variety of foods. So, your daughter will be filled with excitement in this area. Thanks Guenmai! a passionate email, which has totally convinced me!
the only thing i was really worried about was the size. we had a suite, but they made a mistake and gave it to somebody else - apparently there are only a few suites with twin beds - however we are on the waiting list, and i just looked at our website and the premier room we have booked is 72 sm! so very generous, shouldnt be a problem ... Now i just have to decide on where to get spas and what restaurant for new years .... !!
PS: bad wording in my first email gave the impression that it was me travelling with my younger daughter, when in fact i am going with my mum. (me: early 30, and mum: mid-late 50's!) but we both love shopping and food, and being amongst lively street action, so location still sounds very appropriate

OK...It's you and your Mom. This couldn't be more perfect for the both of you then. As for spas, there's a spa at the Face restaurant complex. If you get on the skytrain at the Rajadamri stop and go one stop to Siam...the main exchange...and then get off and get on the Sukumvit line of the skytrain and go east...and get off at ThongLor stop. Then it's a 5-minute or less walk. There are only two skytrain lines in Bangkok so it's impossible to get lost. There's the north/south line that ends at the river at one in and at Chatuchat open air market at the other end. And then there's the east/west line.
I think Face restaurant and spa are on Sukumvit, soi 38. The even numbered sois are on the south side of Sukumvit Blvd...the same side that the huge Emporium Shopping Mall is on which is at the Phrom Phong skytrain stop, one stop before ThongLor. The odd numbered ones are on the north side of Sukumvit.
There's Face Thai restaurant and spa. I'm sure someone will jump in...Kathie/Lcuy/Carol...are you out there and give the right soi number if I've gotten it wrong. I've been there, but kind of walk around blindly, not paying much attention since I know my way around.
You could have spa treatment and lunch or dinner on the same site. I don't remember what the website is for Face. I have that info at home.
Now that it's your Mom who's coming, you'll definitely have to walk up to Pratunum Market. They have some really nice linen blouses. Part of the market is inside attached to the Indra Hotel and then other parts are outside. You'll have a ball checking things out. Remember it starts, on the sidewalk, one block up from the huge Central World Plaza Shopping Mall. And across the street from Central World Plaza Mall is Naryaphand which is the huge multi-floor Thai crafts center with crafts from all over Thailand.
Also if you want gorgeous shawls, handwoven in northeastern Thailand, and pre-cut pieces of beautiful ethnic pieces of fabric that can be used as table runners, etc, then go to a store called, "Come Thai" on the 3rd floor in the Amarin Plaza. The Amarin Plaza is next door to the mini shopping center that the Erawan Tearoom is in. There's also a smaller Naryaphand Thai Craft store in that mall,too. You can access these malls via the skytrain walkway or the street level. The skytrain walkway connects all the major malls including Paragon, Siam Discovery and Siam Center, and Central Chitlom department store. Make sure to ask information at the mall if they have a tourist discount card. I know Central Chitlom department store gives out a discount card as well as Emporium Mall.
I would recommend getting a Nancy Chandler map of Bangkok before you leave...nancychandler.net and going over it to familiarize yourself. The map is quite good with listing tons of points of interest. Happy Shopping...Happy Travels!

Face is one of my favorite spas and Lana Thai at Face is one of my favorite restaurants. Take a look at www.facebars.com click on Bangkok and you can access the spa menu and the restaurant menu.

Thanks kathie and Guenmai, am printing out all those great tips as i write this ... i have actually been to bangkok once before, but it was quite a short visit a few years ago now, and i didnt get to do that much. i do have an old nancy chandler map, but might get a new one ... ?
I will be sure to post some feedback on return from my travels. though by the sounds of it, i dont think i will be doing much you guys wont have already experienced ... but i suppose its good to get different opinions and responses ...
So far i have decided that i will definitely be eating at China House for the peking duck, and gorgeous refurbishment. I love the idea of 1930's shanghainese tea house they seem to have gone for. The pics of that room looks amaing! was thinking Le Normandie (?) though i dont know if it looks a wee bit over the top for me ... though i suppose thats the point. Def afternoon tea at the oriental ... still trying to find best spots for street food, and will also try FACE for dinner. Oh, and aside from shopping, lots and lots of massages and spa treaments ... prob from the four seasons as it will be easy because i am staying there, but also might try the Penn and Oriental, as these are both places i am interested in scoping out for future visits to bkk!

In the spirit of continuing this endless debate - we prefer the Penn especially for its location. In our view its located on the right side of the river and the river offers a tranquil respite from the hectic inner city experience. We enjoy the ride over to the skytrain and other locations.
