It's time for us travelers to reclaim our foreign exchange fees!
1-3% of all foreign <u>transactions</u> from 1996-2006 on credit cards will be reimbursed or a $25 minimum.

I got my letter in the mail Monday. If you choose to receive more than the $25, you need to submit ALL your receipts for that time period!

You don't have to submit anything - look at Option 2.

heymo - that is incorrect. There are three options, one of which is the &quot;Easy Refund&quot; for $25. To get more than $25, there are two other options:
(1) the &quot;Total Estimation Refund&quot; where you estimate the number of days spent outside of the US and answer some questions about the type of travel you did (no documentation required) - maximum refund is 1% of estimated foreign transactions.
(2) the &quot;Annual Estmation Refund&quot; where you provide the total dollars charged each on each card you had. It is not necessary to provide documentation but you are required to keep your supporting statements etc. on file, subject to audit - maximum refund is 1 to 3% of estimated foreign transactions.

You do not have to receive a letter with a refund ID to file a claim. Here's a direct link to the settlement website:

I have all of my credit card records back through 2002. Before that time I estimated, based on the number of days I spent outside the US. They note that items such as travel journals and passports can be used to support your claims (but as Craig notes, they don't need to be mailed). You can submit your form online.

Okay...my mistake.

Its not clear to me on the mentioned Option 1 - where you estimate the total number of days- how does that translate into dollars and then 1% refund?

Bill - The Settlement Administer does the dollar estimate based on some pre-determined formula for how much people spend when they travel. Rather than to rely on that its better to do the other option. Note that credit card issuers are required to provide statements or other information so that you can support your claim.

I got my letter. This is very exciting. I lived in Europe for an entire year 2002-2003. Hopefully the formula will work in my favor :)

I'm really excited about this - I'd been abroad for 7 of the 10 years in this time frame. I hope to get back enough money back to finance my next big excursion! :D
