Can't help with Krabi.
In BKK, definately the Sukhothai. We stayed there a couple of years ago and it was excellent.
Try to get one of their Exec packages. That's what we did. $225 a night for the Executive suite including pick up and drop off at the airport in a big, comfy Benz complete with morning paper and cold rags (when they picked us up), it was terrific.
Only problem with it is the location. Of course, taxis are cheap in BKK so this isn't a problem as far as money is concerned but it can mean a time delay AND you will run into some drivers who don't want to go over there.
One trick we learned to help with this was to take note of which way the street was headed that we were on and if it meant lots of turning around for the driver (because of all the one way streets) then we would cross the street and THEN catch a taxi. This would make it faster and easier for the driver and a little cheaper for us although in BKK, that isn't really an issue. You're talking the difference between a $2 taxi ride or a $1.50 taxi ride. Who really cares about that? Not me!
There are other nice hotels in town but none with the Thai flavor of the Sukhothai.

Places in and around Bangkok to see traditional Thai architecture and/or modern interpretations thereof would include:
Grand Palace, particularly Wat Phra Keo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha)
Wat Benchamabophit (Marble Temple)
National Museum
Vimarnmek Palace
Anantasamakom Throne Hall (Marble Palace)
Jim Thompson's house
Sukothai, ancient capital
Ayuthaya, ancient capital
Summer Palace of the King near Ayuthaya (several buildings)
Some excellent books on Thai architecture and design are:
Classic Thai by Chami Jotisalikorn et al
Contemporary Thai by Wongvipa Devahastin Na Ayudhya, et al
Thai Style by William Warren

make sure that you visit the jim thompson house not far from the mbk shopping center....there are books on thai design available for purchase...also in the rear of the main jim thompson store is their interior design business which many people miss...there is a good cafe for lunch in the main store as well
the "V" palace mentioned above is also a good place to see royal style...it is near the parliament building...

For contemporary design in a boutique type property take a look at The Metropolitan designed by Christina Ong.
