Flights to Bali
 

Can someone please advise on a good price for airfare from NYC to Bali? I'm planning on going in the summer and the flights all seem to be around $2,000 per ticket. Does that seem high?

singapore air is about $1900-2000 as you suggest but i also looked at malaysia air and it was about $1400.

Malaysia Air is a fabulous Airline. And $1400 is a great price. I'd jump on it NOW.

By the way, no American cariers fly into Denpasar. Any of the American carriers would fly you to, say, SIngapore or Bangkok or Hong Kong and then put you on another airline to Bali.

Yes, $1,400 is a good price for summer travel. I was looking around for awhile and didn't see anything really below that for NY-Bali flights. The Malaysia Air flts go about 3 or 4 times per week, from Newark. They make a brief stop in Stockholm. And, if you are interested, you can add a Stockholm stop-over for about another $50, I believe. Yet, I imagine, that might require bringing along some very different clothes. I used the site vayama.com which seemed to produce a good and comprehensive list of Asian flights. Virgin Atlantic also came up on the site as having some good prices, but I'm not sure if that was only to Singapore or they then connect with some other carrier in Singapore to get you to Bali.

Is that really a good price? I have no idea since both times I went to Bali, a travel agent I sometimes use put it together and we paid less than that for flight on Singapore Airlines (both times and both times in late August and early Sept.) and it included 8 nights in a 5 star hotel (5 at Le Meridien and 3 in Ubud in a villa at the Kalamandu--not sure if I spelled that correctly) with full breakfast, transfers and even a day of included sightseeing, and the second time, which was last year, we paid about $2000 which included 10 nights in Bali--6 in Seminyak at a five star hotel but the name escapes me at the moment, and four in a pool villa in Ubud at the Royal Pita Maha, and two nights in Singapore. Again, it included full breakfast and transfers and this time, one half day sightseeing and a lunch in Bali and another half day in Singapore.

I guess if I ever go back to Bali, I'm letting Brenda plan the trip again!

laurieco - who is the travel agent you used? I've been searching on Malaysia Air and Vayama and the cheapest flights I can find are for $1794. I flew to Bangkok last year around the same time for only $1,000 and am surprised the flights are so much more to Bali. I guess it is that much further away...

Try calling Asian Affair Holidays. They also have a good website. They are based in Los Angeles, I believe. They are the tour arm for Singapore Air and often have some very good deals for air and hotel. Also, you can use them just to book air and a hotel at your first destination (for example a couple nights in Singapore) and then book the rest of your hotels yourself, using their flights for your return. They may wind up having a good deal, though their cancelation penalties may be higher than if you book everything yourself.

It's a family run agency and both times she contacted me with the trips (I'm on her mailing list) and I added extra nights and upgraded the rooms. It would have been even less money if I stuck with her initial offer.

In July, Malaysian seems to have a fare of $1060 +taxes if you travel midweek (Mon-Thur). Korean offers $1238+ for midweek travel; Continental and Northwest both are $1292+ midweek. I didn't see anyone else offering a fare under $1500.

In August, fares drop a little on Malaysian and Korean, and in August Thai offers a fare of $1264+.

Sing Air this year is much higher than previous years even going JFK which stops in Frankfurt (vs Newark which goes direct to Singapore with exec economy seats). I've been checking and the best fair I've seen was about 1700 for them. Maybe they're having to pay for that big ole super Airbus or something.
But bear in mind, Bali in 2007 was a different price point -- tourism from the States virtually dried up for a time and hotel occupancy was horrid, so there were alot of incentives when Laurie was there. We were still seeing some of that last January, but prices this year are significantly higher.

there is a huge difference in prices this year becasue of the exchange rate.....the $110. hotel in bkk is now $160 for instance

The exchange rates are horrid right now. It's make travel so much more expensive.

Continental flies to Bali via Guam.

Have you considered flying into Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lummpur and then buying a cheap ticket to Bali via one of the budget airlines?

She quoted me a very good price for NYC to Bali on Singapore air, apx. $1100 for this past Nov, including tax. It was a bit last paying with cash. Summer is probably a bit more.
