Flights in China

My wife and I will be flying from Beijing to Hong Kong on a Friday in the end of July. We will be arriving 3 days earlier. I have 2 questions. 1. If I wait to purchase tickets till we arrive in Beijing will we have a problem getting reservations on a Friday. Second, does it matter which airline we fly on? Any to stay away from? Thanks in advance for your responses.

1. Book the first day you arrive. There are plenty of flights, and as long as you are flexible about departure time it's highly unlikely you'll find there's a problem. This is not a peak travel season in China.

You also have the option of flying to Shenzhen, just across the border from Hong Kong, and taking the turbojet service from the nearby dock (ten minutes by courtesy bus) to Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. See www.turbocat.com. This significantly increases your options, and will be considerably cheaper than flying directly to Hong Kong.

2. In general there's little to choose between the major Chinese airlines. None are great, but on a short flight, it doesn't matter, although I'd probably choose China Southern if available. The Hong Kong airline Dragonair is significantly better, but also a great deal more expensive.

You can find this information by asking almost any travel agent, or by looking at the relevant airline Web sites. But the answer is around three hours to three hours and ten minutes.

I'm going to need to book a flight from Shanghai to Beijing. When I get to China, where do I go to book it. Do I do it at the time I arrive? Or go to my hotel and book it from there? Or do I go elsewhere?

A little search of this forum always a good idea. Try:
