Flights from Chiang Mai to Thailand
My husband and I will be traveling in Thailand in November and would like to fly from Chiang Mai to Ko Samui while we're there. We know that we can book airline tickets from the states before we go, but were wondering if it's possible to get better deals if we do it once we arrive in Thailand. Has anyone had any experience with in-country flights in Thailand? Any advice would be appreciated.
Also, we are planning to spend 4 days in Ko Samui during the last week of November, but we are unsure if the rainy season will still be in effect during this time. Would it be beter to visit the western coast (i.e. Phuket or Krabi?)

i am sure james will answer you with fabulous info but let me say that i usually have booked through a variety of thai travel agents and saved money...this route is only flown directly by bangkok air i believe, if at all, but james will tell you about that....
just today i read a thread that someone said that they booked bkk-siem reap tickets on bkk air cheaper in bkk than in the us....

As my learned friend has alreay said to get from Chiang Mai to Koh Samui using same airline ( change at BKK ) you need Bangkok Airways. Bangkok Airways rarely used by us locally due to high fares. Thai Airways flies 12 flights per day Chiang Mai to BKK but Bangkok Airways has just 1 flight on a turbo-prop via Sukhothai or a few flights per week with a 717.
At thre moment domestic avaition is set for major changes with several operators about to start low cost flights. One is a venture using 12 757's ( wrong plane! ) another is a deal with Air Asia of Malaysia to start high frequency no-frills budget 737's ( right plane! ).
However as you are talking about this month your best bet is to deal with Bangkok Airways, simply easier.
As far as getting tickets cheaper locally I don't know what you pay in the USA, locally BKK-Samui is B 7,700 return which is almost $200 these days. Twice the average local monthly pay! I think if you call Bangkok Airways in NYC you can probably get some multi-sector deal.

Without wishing to 'Rain on your Parade' you may wish to note that November is Koh Samui's peak rain month!! You might care at this time of year to choose Krabi or Phuket instead for better weather ( you can fly non-stop Chiang Mai to Phuket with Thai ).

In my five trips (so far) to Thailand, I've never yet had any reservations other than my arrival hotel! You can book your in-country travel for very reasonable prices once you arrive in Thailand. Prices do not go up if you don't book airline tickets early. You pay the same price whether you buy your ticket the day before you travel or two months ahead!
From Chiang Mai to Samui, I would imagine you have to go through BKK and change planes/airlines. Samui has one of the neatest airports anywhere. It's all open air! It's soooo tropical and unique. You know you are "not in Kansas anymore" when you land there! Have a great time.
