First time in Bangkok
Friends,
I need to know of the best places to visit, must do activities and must eat at restaurants, as well as best shopping places (particularly for fabric) in Bangkok. I am leaving in 2 days and will be there for 3 weeks. Thanks!

If you're there for 3 weeks, you'll get to see all the major sights and most of the secondary ones. Best bet is to buy 2 guide books and sally forth. The books will tell you the same thing we will in greater detail, i.e., Grand palace, wat Pho, Wat Arun, Teak Palace, Jim Thompson House, canal tour, floating market. For restaurants, do a search on this board. There was a recent thread that will provide the relevant information. My current favorite is The Gallery Cafe, 1 block from the Royal Orchid Sheraton. Many like harmonique.
If you want more specific info, stae your budget concerns and shopping desires. have a great time.

gpanda is correct...tell us a little about budget issues and what you like specifically and we can better advise....people here do not "need" anything, by the way, they request info....
fabric is also found in every shop on sanpan lane which is near the grand palace ....thousands of stores... what kind of fabric do you want??
a great book for shopping is the treasurers and pleasurers of thailand and myanmar, just recently updated...available on amazon...ron krannich is the author with his wife....it tends to be more upscale...also has fabulous restaurant selections....

Def go to the Night Bazaar...Bob is right, the JT shops and esp outlets are fab but IMO the one at Soi 93 is much better than the other and it is a bit of a trek...assume u want silk...Narai Phand near the Chitlom BTS stop has a good range...for woven textiles I love Sop Moie...River City is a pricey option but a decent one stop place...must do activities - khlong tour, night bazaar, Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Jim T house, 3 weeks I would say go to Jatujak once on a Fri pref (pull up earlier posts on this as opinions differ), Suan Pakkad lacquer house, shopping at Central Chitlom

Paya moved end last year Bob - very near the original location but no longer on the main Skmvt road, a much larger shop without the wooden staircase...do not remember the exact new location but they may have a sign up on the door or a google search could yield results

Love Bangkok alot, especially when comes to food and shopping... Pratunum, there a few rows of stalls that sell fabric and Sam Peng Rd (at Chinatown) you may find a textile center there. Sometimes along the road, you may get to see some street hawkers selling fabric too... have fun!
