First nights in Bangkok

First nights in Bangkok
My wife and I are starting a 7 week tour this summer (July Aug)through Thailand Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos and will be starting and ending in Bangkok. Since we aren't rushed we will be spending a few days in Bangkok to get over the 20 hours on planes and would appreciate recommendations of good (medium priced-$75-$80/nt places to stay that will be near to some of the great points in BK.

My wife and I stayed on Sukhumwit when we went to Bangkok the last time. I think the main issue that you get close to a skytrain station so that it is easy to get around. We stayed at Rembrandt hotel and we were happy with that. Bangkok is great and you can get a very nice hotel for the price you mention
Sounds great to have so much time to travel around...that means that you can take it easy and see more. I have posted a trip report from our trip to Thailand on my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com/thailand2002.htm . Maybe you can find some useful info there.

rembrandt gets mixed reviews, but it has some of the best restaurants in bkk: mexican, indian and italian....its access to the skytrain is not too bad but you must walk to ...
you might look at the centre point serviced apartments....there are several around bkk....centre point silom is one of the most popular and is directly next to the skytrain...
a good hotel site for reservations is:

several serviced apartments are represented there including centre points...tax/service and usually breakfast is included as well...
a couple of addtional suggestions are:
miracle grande hotel on soi 2, sukhumvit (5 min to sky train), chateau de bangkok, holiday inn bangkok on plenochit, ascott serviced apartments--several to choose from, davis hotel, sofitel silom hotel, holiday inn silom
quite honestly there is not a major hotel that is located near to any of the "major sites" of bkk....almost all sites have to be approached via a boat or a taxi....

a stretch to your budget but well worth the extra money is the marriott resort and spa....far nicer than any of the listed places above...and at $90-105 per nite including one of bkk's best breakfasts, it could be a splurge that you would long remember...

You should check into a serviced apartment.Try moveandstay.com for ideas.Then get back to us with questions after you've made some choices. Since you will be in and out of Bangkok, maybe just rent a place, monthly, and then you can leave a lot of the things you accumulate along the way, there. I would page Isis, from this forum, if I were you.In Bangkok, in December,Isis,her partner,Rizzuto, and I got together one evening and Isis and partner were telling us of the apartment they were renting for about $400. a month, if I remember correctly. They were traveling for quite a while around Southeast Asia and used the apartment as their base. Plus, when one is out for that long, it's good to have a place like that because you never know if you might get sick or just get sick and tired of being on the road for an extended amount of time. Plus sometimes travel plans change. I lived, annually,for a couple of decades, in Europe for up to 11 weeks per summer and had a place I rented for the entire summer and would go back to it to recupe from traveling around Europe.It can get tiring being on the road for so long. Plus, if you get ill,you have the number 1 international hopital in the world, Bumrungrad, right there in Bangkok. I know one doesn't want to think of illness, but I was twice at the emergency room while living in Europe, but was at a hospital in the country where I was renting a place. Very convenient. Centre Point Silom, as already mentioned, is in your price range and a real deal. Spacious apartment, clean and nicely decorated, pool, decent breakfast, terrific location. I've been to Bangkok a grand total of one time, but I can't imagine staying anywhere else. To me it seemed perfect.
