Thank you Kathie. It has been a few years since I have been back in Asia. I forgot how wonderfully affordable it is!! I am really looking forward to it. I hope that you are on the mend.

Live 42day, your plan looks fantastic!!!!! All your research will pay off! I like how you and your friend are treating yourselves--prepare to feel pampered!-- to the elegant and small Prince Junk right before trekking (assume that's the plan with Ethnic Trav?). I also was picked up straight at HaLong Pier straight off the boat, going directly to NB. A pretty boring ride--lots of industrial scenery --but such a time-saver vs returning to Hanoi.

One bit of practical advice is, if either of you isprone to carsickness, bring meclizine (bonine) or better yet, get the scopolamine patch. Getting to Sapa from Hanoi--not sure about the road after the modern highway ends ( same highway that goes to/from hanoi airport) when you take the bus, though I'd guess the last part before reaching Sapa to be winding mountainside. To get to the train in Lao Cai after departing Sapa, you'll be on winding roads (This from reading only-- I took a different spectacular but literally nauseating route to an area northeast of there.) Otoh, the boat ride was very smooth and easy--no seasickness at all.

Now you can relax and savor the anticipation!
