Filth and Garbage

When I watch a travel video on Vietnam it always look ok, but 2 friends who have traveled there say that the markets are the filthiest places they have ever seen, with rotted food and garbage everywhere. Have you found this to be true?

You have me all wrong. I have seen poverty, the ghetto and the like. There isnt filth in the markets Mexico or in Africa. I was surprised to hear that there is a horrible amount of filth in Vietnam and I wanted to see if my friends have over exaggerated.

selena--

i never saw rotting food or garbage at any markets in vn, but conditions are primitive and there are big differences in markets.

market sections selling things that need access to water, like fish, may have puddles, and if the markets don't have concrete floors, these sections may be a little muddy. u'll also see things we normally don't see in supermarkets, like fish guts, as vendors sell whole or live fish, then gut them for customers.

market sections selling dry goods (fabric, shampoo, preserves) and produce are fairly clean, from what i saw. and the bigger markets, which have "food courts" selling noodle soups and sandwiches, were among my favorite places to eat during the years i lived in saigon.

I have travelled (and lived) in Mexico, and I have travelled in Vietnam. With the exception of Mexico City, Vietnam's population seems to be more dense, which would contribute to more litter in the streets and markets. But I wouldn't classify it as "filth and garbage". My family and I thoroughly enjoyed Vietnamese markets, and highly recommend the country.

just returned from a month in viet nam. a vastly interesting country. don't miss hoi an. if you don't like beaches, friendly people and great beer, don't go. and for some strange reason, they don't resent americans for bombing the crap out of them 30 years ago. they truely love westerners. didn't have a bad meal in 30 days.
