Maximum city is by Suketu Mehta, a non fiction account of modern day bombay. Other books I would also recommend would be Butter Chicken in Ludhiana by Pankaj Mishra, a hillarious read about the authors travels through the small towns of India.

The River, directed by Jean Renoir, is beautiful. (The acting and script are mediocre but the visuals are stunning.)

Deepa Mehta was mentioned above and her films are really worth seeking out: "Earth", "Fire" and "Water". They were very controversial and the final one, "Water" had to be filmed in Sri Lanka as she was booted out of India. They are wonderful dramatic films, very moving, but focus on women's lives and events which are not "politically correct". She has also made the much lighter comic film Bollywood/Hollywood, although this takes place in Canada (it is hilarious). Another good film about Indian emigrants is The Namesake by Mira Nair.

Born into Brothels is truly fabulous.

A photographer begins teaching the local children photography skills in an effort to get them out of their current situation. The children are so absolutely charming.
