Ferry from Bali to Gili Islands

Have you ever used a ferry from Bali to Gili Islands? Is it safe and can be another option for fast boat?

Back in 2004 I went from Bali to Lombok by ferry. I have no opinion regarding the safety of Indonesian ferries, due to lack of info, but I don't remember any safety briefing or life vests.
