Feedback on Ubud hotels ?
 

Does someone have feedback on the following places:

- the new Chedi Club (not the Alila)
- Pita Maha
- Maya Ubud


Aman resorts and FS Sayan look wonderful, but are out of my budget.... Sad...

The only one I've been to recently is the Chedi Club. The group that owns the Legian took over a family owned estate and converted it into a resort. They renovated the individual bungalows and put a lot of attention into the decor, but they're still kind of oddly designed. The whole property is really in the middle of the rice paddies. It's very large, flat, viewless, and extremely hot. (I'm sure it's lovely at night though.) They've brought in zillions of plants, flowers and trees, but it's still, in a word, hot. The restaurant was spacious and again well designed, but absolutely empty. I didn't feel the urge to stay.

How odd is the design of the bungalows ?

I would not stay at the Aman again for 2/3rds the price but 3 full days at FS Sayan is worth 5 at Chedi, in my opinion. I have stayed at all 3 in past 4 years.

The bungalows are little brick cubes. This kind of construction was quite popular in Bali back in the 70's and 80's but has been supplanted by more ethnic and climate-friendly materials like teak and thatch.

The new management has tried their best to renovate, by painting them white and doing up the interiors beautifully, but they are still almost like little kilns. Because of the heat you'd need to keep the windows closed and the aircon blasting. Also the rooms that offer spa attachments seemed almost hospital like to me.

I'm very, very fond of the Legian, Chedi and the whole GHM gruop and I think they have some of the most well designed and well run properties in Asia, but this particular venture, is, to me, a loser.

We stayed at Pita Maha two years ago. Loved it. Our private villa with pool was lovely. We had our two girls so our villa was large (two floors). I'm not sure if all are designed similarly.

It was centrally located and we were able to do some early morning walks.

We left Ubud to stay at Four Seasons, Jimbaran Bay and we missed our spot at Pita Maha.

I think we go for the Pita Maha...
